Off The Coast

2nd round recap and 3rd round preview, just in time for the start of the Stanley Cup Finals. That’s how we operate around here. Jacob jinxes the Ducks, Joey disparages Lucic and Johansen, and Penn clings to the last active vestiges of Sharks hockey (the Barracuda.) Also on the docket this episode: Milbury vs. Subban, a new player and a new affiliate for the Las Vegas Knights, and (attempted) Murder Aboard the IIHF Express.

Back before the Sharks and Kings were eliminated, we talked about some stuff. Reffing and reviews, why the Kings weren’t going to make the playoffs, how big of a jerk Dustin Brown is… That type of thing. Here’s episode 34, hopefully soon to be followed by episode 36, wherein I cry uncontrollably and we break down the second round of the playoffs.

IT’S TIME FOR PLAYOFFS. NO LOWERCASE LETTERS IN THIS DESCRIPTION ARE ALLOWED. PENN AND JOEY PUSH EPISODE 34 TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN ORDER TO PRODUCE THIS EPISODE, WHEREIN THEY MAKE THEIR PREDICTIONS ON WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE FIRST ROUND! IT’S THE MOST MAGICAL TIME OF THE YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRR.

Back in the good old days when the Sharks weren't in the process of throwing themselves off a cliff to join the mangled corpses of the Kings, three friends got together and recorded a podcast. This is their story. Also included, a conversation with a new hockey fan and how the sport we love looks to a fresh set of eyes.

The trade deadline has passed. The Capitals and Wild made the biggest splashes, but all three California teams also made some moves. The Ducks added a great value scoring winger in Patrick Eaves, the Sharks added a honey badger to their roster, and the Kings traded a Saint for a Bishop. Speaking of deadlines, we’re reaaaaallllly bad at them. And a lot has happened since we recorded this episode. Frigging St. Louis.

Penn and Joey have been working on reading each other's minds, Montreal was quick to jump on a more qualified French-Canadian coach, and Vermette and Nyquist were naughty. The trade deadline looms, the Ducks, Sharks, and Kings are all sagging somewhat, but there's still a quarter of the season to be played. Also during this episode, Joey and Penn give Jacob a scare by being horribly misinformed. We're real professional, you guys. And yeah, episode 31 beat episode 30 out of editing...

Penn’s gone, so things run amok! Joey and Jacob talk about Jacob’s experience at the inauguration and then talk ancient hockey that happened before the all star game. But it was edited so we’re releasing it!

Yes, you read the title correctly. "But Penn," you ask, "where is episode 28?" The answer: lost in time and space, but soon to arrive. In this episode, after reuniting, your hosts talk about the All-Star Game, the top 100 players of all-time, and Ken Hitchcock's exit. Tomas Hertl is back, Core Perry has made it to 700 career points, and Anze Kopitar is no longer stuck at 4 goals. Good news all around!

In this episode of California Hockey Talk, Jacob records outside in the freezing cold of a Los Angeles winter, Joey provides some scintillating commentary on the state of the podcast's Google Doc, and everyone shares their various gripes and hopes about their team as we move into the home stretch of the season.
