"K9 Convo" - OFC Dane Haugen

A year that felt “quieter” turned out to be the second-busiest in our department’s history—and that’s just the first surprise. We break down what the numbers really say: why call volume climbed as staffing improved, how proactive patrols nudged crashes down and warrants up, and the single most encouraging stat of the year—a sharp drop in domestic violence calls compared to the recent average. Not everything trended well, though. We dig into the rise in resisting and preventing arrest, the risks in those split-second moments, and why our mantra is comply now, contest later.

We also open the hood on how we’re getting better at the unglamorous work that wins cases. Report writing became a 2026 priority, with Draft One—Axon’s closed system that drafts from body-cam transcripts—helping officers save time while improving accuracy. Pair that with direct feedback from prosecutors and we’re already seeing cleaner narratives and fewer avoidable delays. Wellness got teeth this year, too. We set three sturdy legs—mental health check-ins, tighter cardiac screenings, and a department-backed financial literacy course with Ramsey Solution's "Financial Peace University"—so officers can make better decisions and build stronger lives at home.

Then there’s the story everyone’s been asking about: Officer Dane and K9 Frida. From jail corrections to rookie cop to field training officer, Dane leaned into discomfort until growth became a habit. His leap to K9 handler brought a Slovakian Malinois with endless drive and zero English into a 14-week training gauntlet. Together they learned the real craft of detection: reading breath changes, tail cadence, and head snaps; understanding residual odor; and certifying on fentanyl, meth, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. Frida works hard on the street and sits calm with kids at community events—the rare balance we need.

If you value candid insights into policing that go beyond headlines—data that surprises, systems that improve, and a handler who lets you see the messy middle—this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a friend who loves K9 stories, and leave a review with the moment that stuck with you most.

"Empowering Youth" - SPO Kayla Richard

We brought on School Resource Officer Kayla Richard to showcase how an early interaction with a police officer can light the flame for a lifetime of service, which has now in turn made her a catalyst for positively impacting the lives of juveniles in our city.

Kayla’s path runs through North Dakota State Radio during the DAPL protest, the clerk’s office where paperwork shapes outcomes, and the Youth Correction Center where structure and trust turn “punishment” into progress. She opens up about academy realities—hospital corners, EVOC, firearms, and the infamous OC spray—and the quieter skills that last longer than a bruise: patience under pressure, empathy that doesn’t flinch, and the discipline to look squared-away because details signal control. We talk frankly about women in policing and why layered critical thinking, rapport with teens, and time bought through conversation can change the arc of a call.

The episode centers on two powerful scenes: a violent fight at the high school where Kayla moved first and stabilized fast, and a late-night rescue at a gas station where a mother and two little girls found safety and a way home.

If you care about safer schools, resilient youth, and practical public safety, this one’s for you.

If this conversation resonated, tap follow, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—your support helps more neighbors find their way here.

"Enduring Enforcement" - OFC Anthony Mauser

Our 2024 Traffic Safety Officer of the Year, OFC Anthony Mauser, joins us in studio for a compelling take on the importance of traffic enforcement. OFC Mauser traces his career path from tracking ospreys as a biologist to hunting DUIs as an officer—not for numbers, but for prevention. He breaks down how real DUI detection works at night: the “rhythm” of intersections, subtle cues that precede violations, and calm conversations that reveal more than a flashlight ever could. He’s blunt about the stakes—kids in cars, ruined lives, and the toll on first responders—and equally clear about the mission: visible presence to change behavior before a key turns in the ignition. Along the way, he shares field-tested stories from his US Park Ranger days, including a lost-hiker rescue and a bison goring triage that show how calm judgment and simple tools save lives.

"Patrolman West of Richmond" - OFC Robert Kleinholz

Quickly proving he is a diamond-in-the-rough, Officer Robert Kleinholz's 22-year career in law enforcement embodies the exact thought that comes to mind when someone envisions a professional officer. Coming to us from Richmond, VA as one of our first Lateral Patrol Officers since the program began, OFC Kleinholz takes us on a journey that draws stark contrast of a dangerous urban city with our seemingly sleepy rural community. His love for the profession and a deep respect for suspects and victims alike is a commanding characteristic that is evident during our sit-down with him.
