State Street in downtown Cayce once was a row of shuttered buildings. Now, the CAYCE RIVER ARTS DISTRICT is becoming a magnet for creative people to settle and make their daily life and earn a living in this visionary town. Our conversation with MAYOR ELISE PARTIN explores how artists and other members of the "creative class" are breathing new life into Cayce. The mayor delights in our description of this town as a "mecca for nerds" and a place where lovers of the arts, nature and history can find their tribe.

CAYCE, S.C. -- Lovers of blues music from across South Carolina gathered at a fun and funky little arts center on a steamy Saturday in this riverside suburb of Columbia to pay tribute to a true legend of Carolina Blues, the 93-year-old Drink Small.

This celebration of "the Blues Doctor" and his musical legacy was a presentation of the newly-minted CAROLINA BLUES PRESERVATION SOCIETY, a nonprofit dedicated to chronicling the history of this uniquely American (and unrepentantly Southern) art form. In this conversation, the Society's president DONALD CEASAR -- who performs professionally by one name, Ceasar -- discusses the mission and purpose of the organization.

MACON, Ga. -- For a full decade, from 1969 to 1979, Capricorn Studios was the vibrant musical home to Southern Rock icons the Allman Brothers and a whole host of artists. By 1980, the studios were silent.

In 2015, Mercer University and a visionary team of partners began a nearly five-million-dollar project to revitalize the historic Capricorn Sound Studios and Museum. Today, the studios are once again alive and becoming a magnet for artists to come and make music in the spaces where Southern Rock was born. In this edition, we visit with LARRY BRUMLEY of Mercer University to discuss the ongoing renaissance at one of the temples of American music.

On the KING GEORGE LAVENDER FARM in rural Barnwell County, South Carolina, this aromatic flower reigns supreme, and each summer GEORGE AND ELINOR POOLE welcome hundreds of people from across the South to their land for their Lavender Festival. On this episode, we visit the rows of this bluish-purple bloom and discuss how this small family farm has become a destination for hopeless romantics, artists, foodies and poets.

SNELLVILLE, S.C. -- In the fall of 1981, a then-33-year-old DANNY FORD led the Clemson Tigers college football team to a perfect 12-0 season and the National Championship. He remains the youngest man ever to lead a program to the pinnacle of America’s favorite sport.

Flash forward 45 years. Ford is now 78 and farming land he acquired during his tenure at Clemson. This spring, he is lending his celebrity to his son DANNY LEE FORD II‘s bid to become South Carolina’s next Commissioner Of Agriculture. At age 40, the younger Ford also is a farmer, now challenging a crowded field of candidates for a chance to shape the future of the Palmetto State’s largest industry. The elder Ford has described his relationship with his son as “oil and water.” Still, we caught up with father-and-son side by side on the campaign trail to talk farming -- and of course, a little football.

SWAINSBORO, Ga. -- Tucked inside an antique mall in the town that calls itself “The Crossroads Of The Great South” is one of the most impressive collections of music memorabilia anywhere south of the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, or the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.

With pieces from artists ranging from George Strait to Bob Dylan, from Johnny Cash to The Beatles, collector MICHAEL BRIGHT has assembled an impressive display at the Music Memories Museum in Swainsboro. But Bright, a successful gospel music recording artist, also recently returned to the studio to start making musical memories of his own again.
