In this episode of Off The Job Podcast, Pete and Keiran sit down with Pointy Plumber (Robert) for an unfiltered and deeply honest conversation about addiction, mental health, identity, and redemption.
Pointy opens up about growing up with undiagnosed learning difficulties, being bullied at school, and feeling isolated and misunderstood. At 15, struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, he turned to cannabis as an escape — a decision that led into years of escalating substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol.
What began as a coping mechanism evolved into full-blown addiction. Despite holding down jobs and convincing himself he was “functioning,” his life spiraled into dependency, self-deception, and destructive behaviour that deeply affected those around him — especially his now wife, Charlie.
At 27, after a near-breaking point and a powerful experience attending Narcotics Anonymous, he made the decision to quit everything — drugs and alcohol — and has now been clean and sober for nearly 12 years.
The episode explores:
- Addiction psychology and how dependency forms
- The myth of “gateway drugs”
- Social environments and peer influence
- Hitting rock bottom and the reality of recovery
- Identity after addiction
- Rebuilding trust and relationships
- Transitioning into the trades and finding purpose
- The internal struggle behind a loud public persona
This is a raw, funny, uncomfortable and inspiring story of transformation, accountability, and second chances.
