Off The Record with Aanu episodes

  • African or Black?

    Today’s episode is a black history month special! Following the #securethetribe space late January, Lewa and I discuss black identity from an African perspective highlighting the burden placed on black people all over the world. We address whether or not African immigrants should be instrumental to the development of the black society in Western countries. We also discuss the conflict between Africans and Black Westerners particularly African-Americans and the need to tell genuine African and black stories exclusive of the American experience.

    Articles I read;

    Should the term 'black' to describe people of African origin be retired?

    Not all black people are African American. Here's the difference. - CBS News

    A Debate Over Identity and Race Asks, Are African-Americans ‘Black’ or ‘black’? - The New York Times

    This is the Off the Record with Aanu podcast where I have informal conversations about anything and everything, with topics on socio-political issues and pop culture.

  • Taking the Ultimate Nigerian Feminist Test

    Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in her 2013 ted talk defined a feminist as a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes, on this episode, Charis and I pick up from that definition, discuss our feminist beliefs and address whether feminism should address male issues like toxic masculinity. We also discuss the danger of having personal convictions in a movement and come to the conclusion that it is going to take collective effort to move forward. (Editor Aanu realizes that we did not cover the topic of female enablers of patriarchy amongst other things, it is a pretty broad topic, till next time so stay tuned.)

  • New Year New Me, I guess?
    Earlier this week, I asked on my Instagram story (follow me on Instagram, link below) what things we should leave in 2021. Well, I recorded an episode including some of the answers I got (I tried to include all but it did not work out). It turned out longer and more sentimental than I expected. Happy New Year Everyone!! Hope you have an amazing year. • It's Just Hair???
    "The natural hair movement is more than hair, it is a lifestyle, it is learning to be comfortable in the skin that you are in."  On this episode, my guest Ayo and I explore the complexities that come with having type 4 natural hair in Nigeria, a majorly black country and the world at large. We share experiences and stories highlighting the struggles we face and try to rationalise the why of it all. We also attempt to answer the question is it just hair and come to terms with the reality of having type 4 hair in the world we live in today.  This is the Off the Record with Aanu podcast where I have informal conversations about anything and everything, with topics on socio-political issues and pop culture.  Stay connected with us; Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/offtherecordwithaanu Twitter: https://twitter.com/offdrecordaanu Email: [email protected] New episodes out every two weeks! • Hi and Welcome!
    The Intro I actually planned but this was way more fun to record;
    The past year, I got to have amazing conversations with the people around me and just learn and unlearn. I think everyone needs to not only learn but unlearn.
    Hi, I am Aanu and welcome to the Off the record with Aanu podcast where I have informal conversations about anything and everything. This has been a really really long time coming. I have written and rewritten everything I plan to say in this intro. I am pretty sure by the time I release this, it would not still be good enough but oh well. Welcome, again and on this podcast I sometimes discuss alone or with my guests topics surrounding sociopolitical issues and pop culture, movie and music
    I have a lot to say, more than  a lot actually when my thoughts are organised and shelved into different compartments but I also think I have a lot to hear also. That’s what this podcast is for, exploring different points of view and trying to make sense of “society” so if you want to go along on this journey with me, stay tuned, follow us on all social media platforms linked below, sit back and learn and probably unlearn.
