OFF WITH HER HEAD! is a history (& often bloody) podcast, where on each episode I explore a prominent noble figure in history who lost their head (or met their maker early in some other brutal fashion) by way of execution!
On this episode, we discuss the 500 year old whodunit mystery that is "The Princes in the Tower"! Two young boys - the eldest sons of Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth Woodville - were taken possession of by their Uncle Richard of Gloucester after the sudden death of their father, the King. Richard claimed to place them in the Tower of London for their safety as the eldest boy awaited his coronation, but things quickly changed. Richard seized the throne for himself, becoming Richard III, and his nephews disappear... never to be seen again.
So, what happened to the young princes (technically a King & Duke at the time of their death) and was their Uncle behind it?
Shakespeare famously painted Richard III as a hunched back, sharp toothed, villain of a man - but how much truth was there to his historical plays? He was writing under the Tudor regime after all...
However, an incredible archeological discovery in 2012 solidified at least ONE of those infamous claims.
Were the young boys murdered by the hand of their plotting Uncle Richard III that summer of 1483? Did one escape and flee to the countryside in a deal brokered by his Mother? What does the evidence tell us, now in the 21st century?
I dive deep into the theories, facts, and art of the 15th & 16th Centuries to see if I can find out. This is a fun one, let's go!
