Michael Chernow’s story is not a clean arc. It’s chaos, abuse, addiction, overdose, and then — structure, discipline, faith, and radical accountability. He grew up in a volatile household with a physically ill and mentally unstable father. Verbal abuse turned physical. At 12, he slit his wrists in front of his dad, hoping for a hug. Instead, he got more rage. By 13, drugs entered the picture. By his late teens and early twenties, it was cocaine, heroin, and survival mode.
And then came the overdose.
In this conversation, Michael walks Yale through the moment that nearly ended his life — and the two-week death march that followed. He talks about the shame, the self-hatred, the inability to stop even after wanting to. And then he talks about Marcus — the man who changed everything. A mentor. A fighter. A sponsor. The person who handed him a plan, hour by hour, built on prayer, pushups, oatmeal, Muay Thai, chicken and broccoli, and discipline. What started as survival became structure. Structure became confidence. Confidence became momentum.
From bartending at Frank Restaurant to founding The Meatball Shop, scaling Seymour’s, and ultimately building Creatures of Habit — a wellness brand rooted in routine and personal responsibility — Michael reframed his addictive wiring into obsession for growth. He didn’t eliminate his intensity. He aimed it. This episode is about addiction, ambition, fatherhood, mentorship, asking for help, and what happens when you stop running from yourself and start building something you’re proud of.
