Oh Man How Fast my Mind Can Turn Around?

Has one statement ever just turned you off and sent your head spinning, or is it just me? It can happen to me fairly regularly. I mean today was going really well. I was staying focused and feeling good and then I wasn’t. I was so distracted I made mistakes at work. Since it was late in the day I finally just gave up working.  This isn’t one of the fun distractions like an online game or a tv show. This was replaying the thing over and over in my mind. This was very debilitating. It used to haunt me for hours maybe even days. But now I have it down to less than an hour. I can usually talk myself down in a lot less time than it used to be. This is a distraction and it keeps me from producing at my highest level.

What tools are helpful with this problem? What a great question.

  1. Become aware of the thoughts that are going through your head. Look over the story and poke holes in it. This will help you to find out exactly what part is true and what parts are not. Once you question the validity of a thought it loses much of its power.
  2. The world abhors a vacuum. So if you want to stop feeling something determine what it is that you do want to feel and work on putting that feeling into place. What would feeling loved and accepted look like?
  3. Journal about the experience not just about what happened but the feelings that came along with it. Write down all of the thoughts that the experience caused. Get them all down on the paper. It can be good after you get it all out and on the paper to either burn or tear it up.
  4. Mirror work: Look yourself in the eye using a mirror and say out loud positive statements about yourself. Tell yourself the things you know you need to hear. Things like “I am Trustworthy, Lovable, and Enough.”
  5. Anchor: You can write or print up a statement and put it on a wall where you will see it often. Perhaps wear a piece of jewelry. I have the rubber bracelets and they say “ I am worthy” on one side and “I am enough” on the other and you can have one if you just pay for postage. Or even anchor it to a particular place in your body and you can bring the feeling right back by touching that place.
  6. Meditation: Just concentrate on your breathing in and out. If your mind wanders do not place blame just go back to thinking about your breath.
  7. Yoga: is a great way to clear the mind.
