Why “Kabouter”? Because we live and work in Noord Brabant, Netherlands, where kabouters roam free. In the folklore of the Low Countries, kabouters (the “ou” is pronounced “ow,” like someone just kicked you in the knee) are tiny people who live in red-capped mushrooms.* They teach useful skills and help in the home. For example, a kabouter taught people how to make wooden shoes. 

Our RPG products are specifically designed to help new players embrace the game and experienced players have new experiences. And we like mushrooms, but to eat, not to live in.

* Humza Kazmi told us on Twitter that if you pronounce it “ka-BOO-ter” it means “pigeon” in Urdu. There’s something in there about ka-BOW-ters riding ka-BOO-ters. Give us some time. We’re a fantasy company. We’ll come up with something.

Cal and Hereward celebrate 40 years of the revolutionary 8 Bit mirco-computer space trader Sim "Elite" with it's co-creator, Ian Bell.

"Ian Colin Graham Bell (born 31 October 1962 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire) programmed, designed and developed the computer game Elite (1984) with David Braben, which met with much acclaim."

"Bell attended the independent St Albans School. He studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating with a degree (1st) in Mathematics in 1985, and a Cambridge Diploma in Computer Science in 1986."

"Elite is a space trading video game. It was written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell and was originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984. Elite's open-ended game model, and revolutionary 3D graphics led to it being ported to virtually every contemporary home computer system and earned it a place as a classic and a genre maker in gaming history. The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite".
