Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness. It spreads when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk, projecting tiny droplets of the virus up to six feet away. Due to the increasing number of confirmed flu cases in Oregon, area hospitals have announced their enhanced precautions season to help keep patients, visitors and staff safe.

In January, time-off benefits for most unclassified employees will change to a PTO – or Paid Time Off – system. Under PTO, employees will still earn the same amount of time off, but there will be differences in how the time can be used. And this month, employees can elect two voluntary components of the program – a cash-out of PTO hours and a one-time transfer of sick leave into the new PTO bank.

Research shows therapy animals offer true healing powers that, for many patients, complement the results of traditional medical treatment. OHSU Doernbecher is one of only a handful across the U.S., with two full-time hospital facility dogs who provide love, support and companionship to the hospital’s young patients, family members and staff.
