Oilersnation Pre Game Podcast with Tyler Yaremchuk

Tonight's game features two teams that are really on the opposite ends of the confidence spectrum. The Oilers are coming off an exhilarating, electric win over the Toronto Maple Leafs that featured the potential goal of the year from Connor McDavid, some great saves from Mikko Koskinen, and a beautiful pass in overtime by Leon Draisaitl. As for the Senators, they're currently on a seven-game losing streak and they haven't just been losing, they've been getting smoked for the most part. They've lost each of their last five games by at least three goals. The Oilers really don't have much of an excuse to not get two points tonight.

We don't know very much about the Oilers lineup heading into this one, but I shared my thoughts on what I think might happen for tonight's game in today's episode of the Pre Game Pod (brought to you by YEG Burger & Nation Beer). Considering the fact that the Oilers played last night, it's safe to assume that there will be changes though. I also gave my betting preview and ran through some numbers for this matchup as well!

The Oilers will wrap up another two-game set against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight from Ice District on Hockey Night in Canada. These two teams are coming off a high scoring contest on Thursday night and there's no doubt that for each side, preventing goals will be the focus tonight. For Edmonton, they're currently on a two-game slide and are just looking to put together a full 60 minutes of solid hockey. On the other side, the Leafs have found some early season success and are looking to extend their lead on the top spot in the Canadian division over the Montreal Canadiens.

We knew coming into this season that every game would be big and that's certainly been the case for the Oilers this season. Tonight is no different. A win over the Leafs in this one should have them feeling good as they head into a stretch of games against the Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames, which will be an important run on the schedule. The Oilers also play tomorrow night and it's always a huge boost the get the first win in a set of back-to-back games.

The Oilers return home from a four-game road trip tonight and begin a two-game set against the Toronto Maple Leafs. These two teams split their first two games against each other and since that point, the Oilers are 1-1-0 while the Leafs are 2-0-0 after sweeping their set against the Calgary Flames. At some point, the Oilers need to start winning consecutive games and if they can find a way to do it this week against the Leafs, it would give both the team and the fan base a much-needed boost.

Despite losing their second game against the Leafs last week, I actually thought the Oilers played better in the game they lost. Granted, Toronto didn't have Auston Matthews in the lineup for the second game and he'll be back tonight, but the Oilers should be confident in their ability to get two points tonight.

The Oilers will wrap up their four-game road trip tonight with their second straight game against the Winnipeg Jets. Edmonton won the first meeting of the year between these two teams on Sunday night thanks to a buzzer-beater from Leon Draisaitl and tonight, they'll look to win their second game in a row for the first time this season.

This game should be much tougher to win for the Oilers considering the Jets aren't playing in back-to-backs like they were on Sunday and they'll also have their number one goalie Connor Hellebucyk between the pipes. Still, there are plenty of reasons for Oilers fans to be optimistic heading into this one.

The Oilers continue their four-game road trip tonight with a matchup against the Winnipeg Jets! The Oilers are coming off a loss on Friday night to the Toronto Maple Leafs but they actually played pretty well. Personally, I think they played better in the loss than they did in the win over the Leafs earlier in the week. For the Jets, they're coming off a win last night and are currently on a three-game winning streak after beating the Ottawa Senators in three straight games. This is the first meeting of the year between these two teams and every game will be huge between these two clubs considering they'll likely be fighting for a playoff spot towards the end of the year.

The Jets will likely be going with former Oiler Laurent Brossoit between the pipes since they started Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebucyk last night. Winnipeg hasn't been great at keeping pucks out of their net this year and with their backup goalie getting the start tonight, Edmonton is going to have a great chance to score some goals and get back into the win column.

The Oilers will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season tonight as they play their second straight game in Toronto. The first game was a low-scoring affair, which surprised almost everyone, but I'm sure Oilers Coach Dave Tippett would love to see his team put forth another good defensive performance. Some fans didn't like the way that the Oilers won on Wednesday night but no matter how you win, it still gets you two points in the standings. Hard to complain about that. Now, the Oilers will be looking to get back to .500 on the year with another big win in Toronto.

Edmonton could get James Neal back in the lineup tonight as he is finally healthy and ready to go. On the other side of things, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be without star forward Auston Matthews and veteran Joe Thornton. For the first time in 321 days, the Oilers hit the road and will play a game outside of Rogers Place. This trip comes at a good time as the team is looking for a bit of a spark as they will try to end their two-game losing streak tonight when they open up a two-game set against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

For the second time in this young season, the Edmonton Oilers will be looking to bounce back from a poor performance. The team failed to show up on Saturday night and by the time their game got to where it needed to be, it was too late. They dropped Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 5-1. The good news is that they don't have to wait long to get their revenge as they'll take on the Habs tonight, with revenge on their minds.

Well, game two of the season was a lot more fun than game one! The Oilers followed up a disappointing performance in their season opener with a very solid game on Thursday night and brought themselves back to .500 on the year. Obviously, Connor McDavid is getting a lot of love for his four-point performance and his highlight-reel goal but there were plenty of other positives from the Oilers 5-2 win. I went over them in today's pod!

As for tonight's game, history is certainly on the Oilers' side in this matchup as they have not lost to the Montreal Canadiens in regulation in the last three seasons. The Habs are also coming off a disappointing loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in their season opener. They blew a 3-1 lead and eventually lost the game in OT.

Isn't fun to be stressing about the Oilers again? After one game, some fans are already hitting the panic button ahead of their second game against the Vancouver Canucks. On today's Pre-Game Podcast, I try to pull some positives from last night's loss and go through what the Oilers need to do better tonight. I actually think there are some reasons to believe that the Oilers will bounceback really nicely tonight and I explain my thinking today on the pod.

There are a handful of players who should be highly motivated to make an impact tonight and I personally think the fact that the Oilers are the home team for a second straight night gives them a bit of an advantage. I know there aren't any fans, but I still believe that being in your own rink still holds a bit of value.
