As we prepare for a day of fasting and prayer, we must know the type of fasting that the Lord is pleased to bless. We note from Isaiah 58 that the Lord delights in those who fast to loose the bonds of wickedness and feed the souls of the hungry. Such a fast the Lord will bless by being the Guide, Satisfaction, and Strength of His people.

With all the discussion about identity today, Christians need to understand that their identity is distinct from the world. Even as Stephen’s face shone as an angel, so those bought by Christ’s blood and indwelt by the Spirit are to be distinct. They are to be distinct by:

In Psalm 7, David is experiencing the injustice, persecution, and slander of a wicked man. His response to such adversity is to trust in his God, who is a judge and a defense. During the life of Jesus, He endured many similar attacks. He was falsely accused and persecuted at the hands of many different men. He endured such to procure for us the mercy of the Lord. Psalm 7 teaches us that we can trust in the Lord when injustice would overwhelm us because our defense is of God. It is a defense Christ earned for us on the cross, even as He Himself would cry out the words of this Psalm.

Isaiah 2:5-22 speaks about God’s judgment about the pride of man over and against the authority and light of God’s word. But God in His grace calls out to people to come and walk in His light! As we prepare to observe the Lord’s Supper next week, let us hear this call to reject all trust in man and to come and walk in the light of the Lord.

In Acts 6, we note how the apostles, as the official ambassadors of Christ, create the office of deacon. We note the necessity of this office for the proper and healthy functioning of the church, the qualifications for this office, as well as the calling of every member of the body of Christ to service in the church.

In Psalm 6, David in a time of both bodily and spiritual affliction wrestles with understanding the character of God during affliction. This Psalm teaches us that in times of trial, we should seek the Lord in prayer, bringing our earnest and honest petitions to Him, but we should pray to Him as the God of all mercies and be confident that He hears our prayers for the sake of Christ.
