In this episode Augustine talks to possibly the best trad climber in the world about offwidths, fingertip cracks and runouts. We also talk about what its like to grow up trad climbing, and how to deal with fear on a scary lead. Pete Whittaker has trad climbed all around the world and has ticks of many a painful crack climb under his belt. A few of the climbs we talk about include Century Crack, a 5.14b offwidth roof crack, his rope solo ascent of Freerider, a 12d on El Capitan, and the Crucifix, another horizontal crack project. Enjoy!
Karen Lane and Parker Reed talk about how they got into climbing. Karen was tricked onto the climbing team at her local gym, and Parker first went climbing in the New River Gorge thinking that five feet between bolt placements was runout. They both survived, though, and went on to become fun, kind people who also happen to be able to give you beta on 5.13 trad routes. We also talk about what it’s like to walk the crag for four hours looking for a route, hyperventilate on a trad climb, go from being a good comp climber to being a good outdoor climber, and how to convince your parents to let you climb outside.
This episode will take you to the crag with us, letting you experience what a day out climbing is like. In this episode we struggle to fulfill our goal of 10 climbs in one day. This episode is also great for families who are new to climbing. And we give you ideas for good climbs for kids at Muir Valley and tips for beginning leaders.
The Old School Crag Kids talk with Dario Ventura, who grew up at Miguel's Pizza, his parents' world-famous restaurant and climber's campground at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky.
