There’s Fleet Week and then there’s FLEET WEEK

Fleet Week.

Dress Whites. New York City. Thousands of sailors turned loose in Manhattan with a little money in their pockets, way too much confidence, and absolutely no adult supervision.

What could possibly go wrong?

In this episode of Olde Salty Bastards, Tug tells the story of one unforgettable Fleet Week liberty night that started out reasonably normal and quickly went completely off the rails.

There’s drinking, questionable decision-making, a VIP named Mr. Johnson, an ankle monitor that probably should have raised a few questions earlier in the evening, and one extremely close encounter with a New York City subway train.

Because apparently when you’re young, wearing Dress Whites, and wandering around Manhattan during Fleet Week, your brain occasionally decides that basic survival instincts are optional.

Some military stories are about courage, sacrifice, and honor.

This isn’t one of those stories.

This is about being young, dumb, on liberty, and somehow making it back without ending up in jail, the hospital, or underneath a subway train.

We made it back clean.

A twenty two year old in Ohio called 911 to report an emergency.

The emergency was that he was too high. On weed. Officers arrived

to find him on the floor in the fetal position, surrounded by what

the police report officially described as "a plethora of Doritos,

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, and Chips Ahoy cookies." He told them he

couldn't feel his hands. Then he handed over his car keys so they

could search it. Then he refused the ambulance.

That is where this one starts, and it goes downhill from there in

the best way.

This episode is about the one job in America where everybody's an

expert, nobody wants to do it, and the same people trashing it on

a Tuesday are dialing it on a Friday night. Tug gets into National

Police Week and the 363 names added to the memorial wall this year.

Why "hold bad cops accountable" and "I hate all of you on principle"

are not the same sentence. And what happens when one human being

gets dropped into every flavor of chaos this country manufactures

and then gets graded on it in 4K by a guy in a recliner.
