Scarcity is our biggest fear. It strikes right at the heart of need to feel safe and, consciously or unconsciously, we are always engaged with this fundamental assumption.

But consider this... scarcity is a delusion.

This wasn't always true, of course. At one time we humans were completely dependent on the natural environment and sometimes there really wasn't enough and we paid the ultimate price.

In fact, this was the fact for so much of human history, and the history of our non-human progenitors, going all the way back to the one celled critters.

So it should come as no surprise that this assumption is still very much alive within us.
None the less, we have so evolved as tool makers (a.k.a. technology) that we now have the ability to guarantee food, shelter, education and healthcare to every man, woman and child on the planet. And to do so without endangering anything else..

So why don't we?

Well, that is the nature of delusions. They are believed and lived out to such extent that they appear to actually be true.

And this is what we suffer from.

This assumption of scarcity and lack runs so deep and is so embedded in our psyche that we measure each other's value based on how much they have.

The rich have always been regarded highly, at least since the era of agriculture. There was no such thing prior to that. But, once property became a thing, the wealthy held an elite place. They had, after all, overcome scarcity.

Yet, all the psychological studies about the effect of wealth have found exactly the opposite. The more you have, the less secure you feel.

We seem to get desperate to attain it and then even more desperate to keep it.

Why is this?

There are two reasons:
The fear of scarcity is still embedded in the nervous system and so you can never really feel secure, no matter how much you have and
The attaining of wealth no longer merely means you are more likely to survive, it is also the designation of your status in the culture. So now it is not just your body's need, it is the need of your ego.

Is there a solution? Yes, of course.

Firstly, we become conscious that this force is within us and begin to reconcile with it. Consciousness brings power, light and healing to everything it comes in contact with.

Secondly, we need rediscover the power of community, the deeper meaning of Tribe.

For some strange reason, we always want to put limits and prerequisites on love, as if it were some sort of business transaction.

Actually it isn't a strange reason at all. To love fully and unapologetically has always pushed us beyond the borderline of "acceptable" behavior.
One of the mot beautiful things about love is that is doesn't obey any rules. In that sense it is always a revolutionary force. It is always a disruption to the status quo.

But, there is something to be cautioned against. We can and do develop unhealthy dependencies, which is not actually love at all.

In fact, it is the exact opposite. It is the fear of love. That is, the fear of being seen, the fear of being exposed, the fear of being unlovable, the fear of not being enough.

Too often, in our unbridled exuberance of youth we express ourselves with an intensity that is quite uncomfortable for The Tribe. Thus our natural capacity to love and express that love, gets suppressed.

And, inevitably, we blame, not the environment in which we had to survive, but ourselves, assuming it to be our own flawed being. Out of this energy of suppression and self hiding comes ideas like "You can't love anyone until you love yourself."

In actual fact the need is to let ourselves love, in every and any way we can.

Sometimes it will not be well received, just as it often wasn't when we were little. And that will sting. But it will also be welcomed... really welcomed by those who also long to have their hearts opened so that love can pour out of them.

While conditions in childhood determined whether it is safe or not to love openly and completely, love, as the very nature of every being, remains intact and inviolate.

You are Love. Come to see that and the question of self-love will be answered forever.

"How do we take care of ourselves and transcend the ego at the same time?"

It is proverbial. The shoemaker's children don't have shoes. To put it in more mundane terms, we don't take care of ourselves.

Self-care is a phrase that gets thrown about a good deal. It is usually referring to quiet time, eating right, exercising, a spa day, just doing something for yourself. All well and good, but there is a much deeper aspect to it.
There are many spiritual and religious traditions that emphasize the immolation or the destruction of the ego self, through self-denial and deprivation.

The problematic nature of the ego is real. It is unreliable, blind and, without proper restraint, a master misery maker.

But then there is the proponents of the prosperity gospel, wherein God wants you rich and wealth is a sign of grace.

How do we find the balance between transcending the egoic mind and taking care of ourselves? The answer, of course, is the cultivation of discerning wisdom.

There are 3 kinds of needs:
The needs of the body
The needs of the soul
The needs of the ego

The needs of the body and the soul can actually be satisfied and yield contentment as a result. The needs of the ego are unending, insatiable and only lead to discontent.

The ego is always the "I want"
The body and soul are always the "I am"

Until some awakening takes place, these 3 are all mixed up with one another. moreover, your genuine needs (body and soul) will remain unmet, when the imaginary and insatiable needs of the ego are being met.

Separating out this self-defeating mix is the real goal of true self-care.

If you talk to most people, they will either say, "It's the end" or nervously stutter out something like, "Oh it'll be OK."

But really... which is it?

I am not an advocate of positivism, hold a good thought and all of that. But neither am I a nihilist or a fatalist. That said, I am totally convinced that we are on the verge of a spiritual renaissance.

How can I say that? Believe me, it is not coming from a Shirley Temple kind of optimism.

We are being pushed up again the wall. We are running out of moves. The birds have eaten all the breadcrumbs and there is no trail back.

Transformation into the butterfly of humanity is by no means guaranteed. If it was, it would merely leave un in our current, infantile state.

No, to wake us up it has to be real and we all know it is getting very real!

To what then do I owe my conviction that we will rescue ourselves. I have a couple of reasons:
We have to
We have access to inner resources that we are completely unaware of
Only in genuine duress, standing on the precipice does the ego yield and we get access to those resources
Love must be our concrete choice, not a nice nice, spiritual idea

When the Wrong Shoe Fits

Sometimes things that feel right... aren't

Oftentimes we are so drawn to the familiar that we mistake it for the best. We have all sorts of associations with things. We draw comfort from people, places and circumstance that have, in fact, long outlived their usefulness.

We humans don't like to change. This isn't all bad. Stability is nice. We like knowing our home, our mate, our job is going to be there tomorrow.
But we humans also want to grow.

This creative tension between the drive to be safe and the drive to be free is at the soul of the dynamism of every individual life.

There was a time, not that long ago, when the gender roles we each played were clearly defined and followed.

But no more. The old structures have crumbled and there is no going back.

Over the centuries there have been so many definitions of the feminine. The goddess, the Madonna, the temptress, the siren, the mother, the earth, the amazon, the nymph.

In this show we explore the breakdown of the traditional (and quite limiting) definitions and also explore the deep archetypal nature of the feminine and the impact it has on both genders.

Truth is we all have within us, that playful, mischievous and unashamedly ecstatic aspect of consciousness that we can rightfully call the Nymph.

"The rose is not red, The sky is not blue. The grass is not green. Color belongs, not to the object seen, but to light" - GP Walsh

It is a strange thing to consider.
We speak of lavender flowers, red sunsets, blue eyes and, in our normal way of thinking we attribute color to the object.
But, if color belonged o the object, it was would always appear the same, even in the dark.

The object possess only the ability to absorb or reflect. Color belongs exclusively to light.

This is one of the many reasons why light has been a metaphor for consciousness since the beginning of spiritual thought.

So what is the color of light?

What is the shape of water?
What is the sound of air?
What does the inside of your mouth taste like?

Light, in its wholeness, is absolutely invisible. Part of it needs to be concealed so that another part is revealed and only then does it become visible.

This also is a pointer to the nature of pure consciousness. Unknowable in its wholeness, it is revealed only in its parts.

And so what is its wholeness?

You! That is the great mystery. You are that great unknowable, infinite light and the whole of your human life is a mere, tiny portion of you, temporarily revealed.

"All the gods and goddesses, all the angels and devils, are all you." - Joseph Campbell

Shiva is the Hindu god associated with destruction. But, oddly enough, he is also the god of manifestation.
The most important thing to ponder whenever hearing about these ancient archetypes or looking at the stunning artwork is that all they represent you.

The transcendent, which is the ultimate reality, can't really be put into words.

Yet you are that!

And so, these powerful truths are expressed in metaphor, story and image. All to point you back to yourself.

So what is the meaning of the god who dances on skulls, plays with snakes, consorts with Shakti and who's famous wheel represents, both the endless cycle of birth and death, and the ultimate liberation from it.

The spiritual journey is not to some distant destination. It is a realization of what has always been. It is the discovery of what is! And what is, is you!
