Our friend Amber Bristow is with us today to talk about her struggles and blessings while being pregnant on the farm. And y’all, she doesn’t sugarcoat a single thing. 

Amber is a cranberry farmer in Wisconsin and came home to work hard and help her parents run the farm with her husband by her side. When she found out she was pregnant, amber was overjoyed, but also nervous about what that meant for her role on the farm. 

On this episode, Amber shares some raw feelings and advice about pregnancy on the farm. It’s an episode for anyone who’s ever been pregnant, considering becoming pregnant, or anyone who’s ever struggled with their identity. (So…all of us.)

How do we help someone struggling with their mental health? How do we talk to our kids about what mental wellness means? How do we share our own stories to positively impact the lives of others?

This week On the Front Porch, we are with our new friend, Andrea Paquette discussing all of the above (and more!) Andrea tells us about how she  faced and overcame her struggles with bipolar disorder which led her to start Stigma Free Society - a charity that has designed programs providing education about stigmas with an emphasis on mental health and peer support for those facing mental health challenges with a special focus on youth.

In the last year, Stigma Free Society has also recognized the need for these programs in rural communities and put a great deal of focus into their tools for those of us living agricultural and rural lifestyles. When we heard this, we just knew we had to have Andrea on to tell us all more!

Andrea is fun, funny, fearless, and a true delight. She shares her story with confidence and transparency with the full intention of using her experiences to encourage others to face their own mental wellness struggles. Her heart of gold shines right through as she walks with us into her journey and shares her passion for mental wellness in rural communities.

In this episode, we share a bit of what this this space looks like and our intentions for our friends who are part of The Rural Housewives. Through most of this episodewe are crying and giggling and both of us felt  we are either crying or gigglegiggling  - but tthat’s life!

Before we hit “record,” we agreed that we had no idea what direction this episode was going to take but that we were going to bare our hearts and let it play out however it may. Do you work with your family? How many challenges come with that? Too many to count? This week, we have our dear friend Chelsey on the front porch with us talking about the dynamics of farming with her family!

This is such a complex topic and Chelsey eloquently describes the different relationships and personalities that come with working alongside her loved ones. She talks us through some of her personal growth, how she has come to recognize differences as strengths, and how it’s okay to know who you work best with (and who you don’t). 

Every family is different, just like every farm is different. It’s beautifully complicated to address  farming alongside your family. We know that each of you face unique challenges and that this topic could even be painful for some. We would love to hear your story and share it with our listeners.
