  • Should I put my files in SharePoint or OneDrive?
    Recorded August 11, 2018

    Summary
In today’s On the SPOT News Brief, Jay Leask and Craig Jahnke talk Microsoft collaboration systems, specifically: SharePoint and OneDrive. To oversimplify their thoughts, inspired by the recently released Document Circle of Life in Office 365, the two ultimately agree that SharePoint is for co-authoring and publishing, while OneDrive is for individuals working on individual content — but there’s always more to it than any simplification can properly document.

Jay Leask: – 00:14 – Today is June 16, 2018. This is Jay Leask, and you’re listening to On The SPOT.
Craig Jahnke: – 00:20 – Hey, with Jay, this is Craig Jahnke for the Speed of Technology podcast. It’s been a while, Jay. Sorry, I thought when you were starting this that you were doing the testing things, so I-
Jay Leask: – 00:30 – No, no, no. There’s no need to test. We’re pros at this.
Craig Jahnke: – 00:32 – That’s why I was trying to demo my Spanish, and I could count to ten.
Jay Leask: – 00:37 – No, hey, I’m going to start out by apologizing. I’ve got a brand-new laptop, so my hardware’s running great, but I’m in a new house, so I don’t have my setup. I’m using the cheap little microphones on my headset, I’m sure the quality is crap.
Craig Jahnke: – 00:51 – Well, it sounds good to me.
Jay Leask: – 00:52 – Yeah, yeah, we’ll see what happens when I check the audio, and it picks up every click and clop and everything in the background. But Craig, to the listeners, Craig and I were just talking about the podcast and the goal of the podcast, and what we enjoy doing, and what we don’t. It occurred to both of us that we should really be recording this, because it was more of a conversation about technology than anything else. To bring us up to speed, I think, maybe reiterate, I think I speak for both of us when I say I really enjoy doing this. I enjoy talking with you about technology. But it is hard to motivate in between … What has it been, four months since we last sat down to do this?
Craig Jahnke: – 01:34 – Well, that was a … I won’t say the motivation wasn’t there. I think for you there was a child. There was a move. There were other things that were probably more important in life in general. But you have your own little motivational quirks and stuff, so you tell me if that isn’t the case.
Jay Leask: – 01:53 – No, that is also true. I do have a one-month-old … No, a two-month-old in the other room right now with my wife and the almost six-year-old. She’ll be six in two weeks. Ah geez, she’ll be six in 10 days, eight days, yeah, no, eight, 10, 12, somewhere in there, about two weeks.
Jay Leask: – 02:12 – We’ve got all the activities she does. Right now she’s doing swim and dance and taekwondo. In taekwondo, she’s auditioning for the demo team, which if you’re on my Facebook-
    Craig Jahnke: – 02:12 – I saw that.
Jay Leask: – 02:23 – … I posted the video of her demo team in Reston...

This episode of On the SPOT, Community Edition, was recorded Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at SPTechCon, the SharePoint Technology Conference in Bethesda Maryland, right outside Washington DC.

Jay Leask – 00:00 – Start recording. Today is March 11th, 2018. My name is Jay Leask, and you’re listening to the Speed of Technology podcast.
Craig Jahnke – 00:18 – Hey, and this is Craig Jahnke, and I’m here with Jay for the on-the-spot podcast.
Jay Leask – 00:25 – Jesus Christ, you don’t go out on the fly well.
Craig Jahnke – 00:29 – I’ll tell you why I don’t go on the fly well. Twice we opened it with talk, and once you said, “On-on-the-spot,” and so then I called it the Speed of Technology podcast. Then you switched it and you said, “Speed of Techno-” … you talk about the speed of technology and you didn’t say podcast. And then you said, “Speed of Technology” podcast and I didn’t know where to go with it.
Jay Leask – 00:55 – Good morning. Today is March 11th, 2018. My name Is Jay Leask, and you’re listening to the Speed of Technology.
Craig Jahnke – 01:03 – Hey, this is Craig Jahnke. I’m here with Jay On The Spot podcast. Last week, we talked about crowd readiness. Today I think we’re going to talk about migration and what the [inaudible 00:01:15] assessment we decided we were going to go to the cloud, we picked a provider, now we’re ready to go. Is that right Jay?
Jay Leask – 01:21 – Well, just as a quick review, last week we discussed what we want to use. For example, you want to go to Azure Ias for all your needs or you want to go to Microsoft Office 365 software as a service. You know you want the commercial or the government edition. You’ve made all these decisions and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, give a quick listen to last week’s episode to kind of get a better feel for all of those things.
Jay Leask – 01:47 – So now it’s just click and go.
Craig Jahnke – 01:51 – Yeah. I think that’s right. Everything just … you pick your environment, there’s little wizards, you pick where you want to go and yeah, you just click it. No, unfortunately it’s not that easy. Usually we try to break things up into a plan, right?
    Jay Leask – 02:05 – Yeah.
Craig Jahnke – 02:06 – We like to at AF Point have a discovery section where we discover what we’re going to do, do some kind of assessment on what we find, and then you know we ideally test that out and follow that up with a full execution. So a lot of phases there.
Jay Leask – 02:24 – Yeah. There’s definitely some things you want to plan for. So I think the first thing you really need to decide is this is no longer the era of moving everything at once. If you’re … for the sake of argument let’s say you’re moving t...

Jay Leask – 00:22 – Good morning. Today is March 3rd, 2018. I am Jay Leask, and this is the SPeed Of Technology.
Craig Jahnke – 00:29 – Hey, this is Craig Jahnke. I’m here with Jay, On the SPOT Podcast where we talk about technology, random things and how you might want to get started moving into technology and some concerns going around.
Jay Leask – 00:44 – Oh, speaking of random things, did you see the article we posted yesterday?
    Craig Jahnke – 00:48 – Yes, I think I saw it.
Jay Leask – 00:50 – There is now a pill that you can take … I’m so glad you said random things because I completely forgot I wanted to talk about this. There is now a pill that you can take that goes through your body and it connects to your phone. It shows you like the build up of gasses in your body, and you get all sorts of data around farting. How amazing is this?
Craig Jahnke – 01:13 – That is really amazing, but I’m wondering why your phone is already in your body that it could connect with it?
Jay Leask – 01:18 – No, your phone isn’t in your body. You know how technology works better than that, Craig.
    Craig Jahnke – 01:23 – I’m guessing Bluetooth enabled.
Jay Leask – 01:25 – Clearly it uses a microwave connection between the pill and your phone. You have to stand at the right angle to the side.
Craig Jahnke – 01:31 – Oh okay. That is awesome, but I don’t necessarily think I want technology passing through my body if I can help it.
Jay Leask – 01:39 – That’s mostly understandable. I guess not everybody is ready for that, but I just thought it was really cool. I’ve taken enough time with that.
Craig Jahnke – 01:47 – That’s when we become borgs.
Jay Leask – 01:51 – Oh boy. All right. Craig, what are we talking about today?
Craig Jahnke – 01:54 – Today I think we’re talking about cloud readiness and taking some considerations into moving to the cloud. Some organizations I’ve heard around the globe are considering their on-premises hardware and infrastructure and putting their data centers in the cloud. It’s a new thing. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it.
Jay Leask – 02:16 – I think I might have heard a little bit about it. Just to kind of summarize,

Craig Jahnke – 00:27 – Hey this is Craig Jahnke and I’m on the spot with Jay, here today on a beautiful Saturday morning to talk about our favorite subject, technology. Jay, what do you think we’re gonna talk about in the area of technology today?
Jay Leask – 00:41 – Well pulling through my magical bag of hat and topic, my magical bag of topics, magical bag of hats, that would be awesome. I think we have the most notes and capable show on is considerations for security and compliance in, you’ll never guess it, on premises infrastructure. I’m kidding. Security and compliance in the cloud, Craig.
Craig Jahnke – 01:02 – Yeah so it seems like everybody I talk to wants to go to the cloud, get to the cloud, be in the cloud, or want to know something about getting there. So just outta curiosity Jay, what do you think would be, how many people are in the cloud.
Jay Leask – 01:19 – Well it depends on what you’re asking there. I think if you were to ask how many people-
Craig Jahnke – 01:23 – How many companies have made the move to the cloud?
Jay Leask – 01:25 – Yeah, well again, if you’re asking how many IT organizations have moved their company to the cloud, I think you probably have a much lower number, but I think realistically, any IT manager who is sitting there thinking about what his employees do from the day to day,
