On The Wards: On The Pods Medical Podcast for Doctors

Dr James Edwards, who usually hosts the onthewards podcasts, talks about the new national intern assessment form and provides an overview on the importance of ongoing learning and development for junior doctors.

James is a Senior Staff Specialist in Emergency Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Chair of the NSW Prevocational Training Council and Chair of the Preinternship (PRINT) committee at the University of Sydney. He previously held the position of Director of Prevocational Education and Training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for 6 years.

He was awarded the Geoff Marel award in 2013 for outstanding contribution to the education and training of junior doctors in New South Wales.  This was followed by a nomination for the Australian Medical Educator of the year in 2013 at the National Prevocational Conference.  James has also completed a Masters of Medical Education at the University of Sydney.

At Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, he is the Chair of the Medical handover committee and was a member of the Local Health Districts Handover Committee.  James received a quality health award for his clinical lead in developing an electronic medical handover.  He was the clinical lead in the hospitals recent National Standards and Accreditation survey for Standard 6:  Clinical Handover.  James has a strong interest in patient safety with membership on the hospital Patient Care Committee and participation on local and district Root Cause Analysis investigation.

He has also spoken at local and national education conferences on the topics of assessment, clinical handover and junior doctor burnout.

David in an intensive care medicine fellow at RPA Hospital. His interests include end of life care, medical education and pre-hospital care. In addition to intensive care medicine he has spent time training in anaesthesia, retrieval medicine and palliative medicine and before qualifying as a doctor he worked as a paramedic.

James talks to Dr Andrew Kaines about the approach to the management of patients presenting with acute visual loss. Acute visual loss in an otherwise normal-looking (white) eye is a rare but concerning presentation.

About Dr Andrew Kaines

Andrew Kaines is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the macula and retina.

After completing ophthalmology training, Andrew spent several years in sought-after international Medical Retina Fellowship positions at London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Jules Stein Institute, UCLA, California. It was during this time that Andrew honed his skills in the complexity of macula and retina disease, and also became involved in leading-edge research into new treatments and diagnostic techniques for retinal diseases.

Since returning to Australia, he has been appointed to a Medical Retina VMO position at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, teaching registrar ophthalmologists in microincisional cataract surgery, retina and general ophthalmology. Andrew also practices privately in Hurstville and the Northern Beaches.

James talks to Dr Jay Yohendran about the approach to the management of patients with acute red eye in the emergency department, including the most common causes of red eye.

About Dr Jay Yohendran

Dr Jay Yohendran is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in glaucoma and refractive cataract surgery. Dr Jay Yohendran graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney Medical School in 2001. Prior to this he completed a Bachelor of Medical Science degree at Sydney University, and later a Masters of Public Health at NSW University. After completing ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Dr Yohendran returned to Sydney to complete his Fellowship in comprehensive ophthalmology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has also completed a twelve-month Fellowship in Glaucoma at Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Yohendran has a special interest in refractive cataract surgery, and has completed a Graduate Diploma in Refractive Surgery at Sydney University.

Dr Tohidi is a Haematology Advanced trainee at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Concord Hospital. He is a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and a member of the RACP Working party for the use of stem cells in cerebral palsy. He graduated from the University of Newcastle with Distinction, and has a special interest in cellular therapies and blood banking.

About Dr Belinda Gray

Belinda is currently an NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Early Career Fellow at St George’s, University of London, in Sports Cardiology and Inherited Cardiac Conditions with Professor Elijah Behr and Professor Sanjay Sharma. Belinda's research focuses on risk stratification, genetics and prevention of sudden cardiac death in the young, including young athletes. Belinda graduated in medicine from the University of NSW in 2006 and completed her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2016 with the support of a Heart Foundation PhD Scholarship.

She is a module lead and lecturer in the Masters of Sports Cardiology (MSc) at St George’s, University of London. Belinda has received numerous research grants and has presented at national and international conferences including the Young Investigator Awards at the Heart Rhythm Society Annual Scientific meeting in USA, and the Ralph Reader Prize at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. She is an early career researcher with more than 30 peer-reviewed publications.
