About podcast:
Hosted by writer-producer-director Giovanna Aguilar, On Verite is a podcast that began with a focus on sharing conversations with filmmakers and creatives about what inspires their work. Over the last couple of years, it has evolved to include guests - thought leaders, the entrepreneurially minded, and other fascinating individuals - who lead with purpose during a time when real, human-interest stories are driving impact for social good.
Did you know that the U.S. movie industry began along the New Jersey side of the Hudson River in the early 1900s? This town is where The Exile, the first all-Black cast "talkie" by Pioneer African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux at Metropolitan Studios, was shot. And where the "mother of cinema, the first female film director and movie executive Alice Guy-Blaché, opened her studio?
Nelson Page, President of the Barrymore Film Center, shares the journey of building the Barrymore Film Center located in Fort Lee, New Jersey and its mission to support the voices of independent cinema and a tribute to Fort Lee's role in the movie-making industry. Opening in October 2022, thanks to Fort Lee's Mayor Mark Sokolich and the support of the Fort Lee Film Commission and Borough Council members, the Barrymore promises to be the leading venue for filmmakers in the NJ-NYC area. It includes a 260-seat cinema and film museum.
The Barrymore Film Center was designed by renowned theater architect, the late Hugh Hardy, whose work includes the renovations of Radio City Musical Hall and the Rainbow Room in Manhattan and so many other theaters.
Meet Challenge Day Facilitator Katie Salvage
"I didn’t know that resiliency was a thing, a reservoir that you have and that’s just available to you. All I knew is, I know how to survive things and I know how to get through it, and I know how to make the most of it."
About Challenge Day:
Serving over 44 U.S. states, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands, Challenge Day is on a mission to create a world where every person in our communities feels safe, loved and celebrated.
Challenge Day is a nonprofit organization committed to building empathy and compassion in our communities. We help youth and adults unlearn harmful habits, experience vulnerability as a pillar to restore strength, and enable them to experience the freedom of full expression through the lens of compassion, connection, and diversity. In the past 5 years we have supported 300,000 students and 60,000 adults directly.
Meet Challenge Day's Program Manager and Facilitator Trish Bruno. She shares her journey about dealing with what she calls 'terminal uniqueness,' feeling alone in experiencing life's challenges growing up. With roots in Colorado as a middle school teacher, Trish saw Challenge Day on a TV episode of Oprah and was touched. Then, when Challenge Day went to her school, she realized that was exactly where she needed to be – helping young people realize their power regardless of the experiences they've had.
“It changed how I was as teacher add changed my school and I watched it change my students. Now in their 20s, they still message me. And we still talk about Challenge Day today, and what it did for them. You know that I think is incredible.”
