憧れていたバッハのコンクール。

応募書類も録音も準備を終え、あとは提出するだけ。だけど、移動中の電車で、スーツケースごと盗まれてしまった。

もう一度やり直す気力が持てず、その年の応募を見送った。「4年後がある」と思っていたから。

でも現実は、たった2ヶ月の差で扉が閉じてしまった。

応募しなかった日。

間に合わなかった2ヶ月。

それも含めて今の自分。

静かに振り返るエピソードです。

I had long dreamed of entering the Bach Competition.

My application was complete, the recordings finished—everything ready to be sent.

Then, on a train, my suitcase was stolen.

With it went the score, the recordings, the forms—

and, somehow, the energy to begin again.

I told myself there would be another chance in four years.

But when the time came, the door had quietly closed—

by just two months.

This is the story of the day I did not apply.

Of the two months that made all the difference.

And of how all of it, even that, has become part of who I am

大晦日の夜更かしから一夜明けた元旦の朝は、ゆっくりとスタート。10時頃よりブランチの始まり。ドイツでは、元旦に特別なブレッツェルを食べる習慣が。我が家では、恒例行事として新年の抱負を言い合い、最後にワルツを踊って過ごします。ドイツの元旦の1日を紹介します。

After staying up late on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day morning starts nice and slow. Around 10 a.m., we gather for a cozy brunch. In Germany, there’s a lovely tradition of enjoying a special New Year’s pretzel. At our house, we also share our New Year’s wishes with one another, and we finish the day by dancing a waltz together. It’s our warm and happy way of celebrating New Year’s Day in Germany.

ドイツの年越しをご紹介。義理の両親と過ごした大晦日は、ラクレットで温かく始まり、デザートで心も満たされます。伝統的なBleigießen(鉛占い)で新年の運勢を占い、ボードゲームで盛り上がった後は、いよいよカウントダウン。零時の瞬間、夜空を彩る花火が打ち上がります。そして新年最初の食事は温かいグラッシュスープ。家族と過ごすドイツならではの年越しの魅力をお届けします。

I’m sharing how New Year’s Eve is celebrated in Germany. Spending the evening with my in-laws, the night begins cozily with raclette, followed by a dessert that warms both heart and soul. We welcome the new year by trying our luck with the traditional Bleigießen (lead fortune-telling), enjoying a lively board game, and then counting down together. As the clock strikes midnight, fireworks light up the night sky. And the very first meal of the new year is a comforting bowl of hot goulash soup. A truly German way to ring in the new year—surrounded by family and warmth.
