Sermon series: Isaiah 13-23: When God Speaks to the Nations

In this series of oracles directed against Philistia and Moab, Isaiah warns Judah not to look for refuge in nations who themselves need refuge. Philistia mistakes the changing of circumstances for security. Moab is brought low, yet remains too proud to receive the refuge that the LORD provides. In the midst of this, Isaiah points us to where true refuge is found: a King whose throne is established in steadfast love.

Yet, Isaiah shows us the downfall of human pride through Babylon's fall, as well as God's compassion for His people and the reality of His unfailing purpose.

This passage shows us that the purpose of marriage is to ‘sanctify’ (v 26), which is to make us more and more like Jesus. The problem that works against this purpose is our sinful self-centredness (vs 28-29, 33). And the power for marriage is to be found in the love of our perfect Bridegroom, Jesus (vs 25, 29, 32). When we are satisfied in His love, we will make wise choices for marriage, work through hard things in marriage, and rejoice in the gift that is marriage.

This passage urges us, “do not imitate evil but imitate good,” because what we imitate reveals whether we are “from God” (v. 11). Diotrephes, “who likes to put himself first” (v. 9), is the evil to avoid. Demetrius, who “has received a good testimony” (v. 12), is the good to imitate. But we need more than examples, we need to be saved from our own desire to be first. Jesus is the preeminent One (Col. 1:18), yet laid down his life for us (John 15:13–15). When he is first, we don’t need to be, and we are freed to imitate good.

Truth is not merely something which we know and believe. It shapes how we love, live, and serve. This is what it means to walk in the truth. Gaius brought great joy to the apostle John because he was walking in the truth. His faith showed itself in practical, costly hospitality toward those serving for the sake of Jesus Christ. In a similar way, we reflect the love of Christ as welcome others into fellowship.

We are constantly being shaped by what we consume. But with so many voices claiming to speak for Christ, how do we avoid being deceived? John warns us to recognise the threat of deception, remain in the teaching of Christ, and rejoice together in Christian fellowship. There is no such thing as a “lone ranger” Christian; we need one another to stay close to Christ. And we stay close to Christ because He first came near to us. The deceivers went out, but Jesus came near—in the flesh, with truth and love—to live, die and rise again for us.

Where is God’s story going, and how does the ending shape our lives now? In the Book of Revelation, Jesus is unveiled as the true King over every competing power and story. The slain and risen Lamb calls His people to overcome through repentance, endurance, sacrificial love, and faithful witness. This is a call to live in hope of the coming new creation where Christ reigns and all things are made new.

How does the Gospel change us? This is where we see the heartwork of discipleship as God restores us by His Spirit as His image-bearers in every area of life. Following the pattern of Ephesians, discipleship means putting off the practices of the old self and putting on the new life found in Christ—a life increasingly marked by truth, generosity, love, and practices that bring blessing to others.

As God’s image-bearers, Christians are called to make His grace, wisdom, justice, and mercy visible through “Gospel show-and-tell,” offering glimpses of life under the gracious reign of Jesus.
