Sermon series: A Preserved People

With the defeat of their enemies, God's people could finally celebrate. The festival of Purim serves to remind the Jews of the relief which they had from their enemies, and they are to celebrate it in every generation so that they may recall what God has done for them. However, the fact that much remained unchanged leads us to reconsider the situation for the Jews. In the end, this points forward to their need of a greater Mordecai who will reign as the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Christmas is a time for light, love, joy and peace. And yet, many of us feel the exact opposite in our hearts. God invites us into the reality of the Christmas story. He shows us that it is reasonable, believable and beautiful because Jesus is at the heart of Christmas.

Sermon series: A Preserved People

Passages like Esther 9 remind us that God is a God of justice. His justice is fair and full. Ultimately, there will be no miscarriage of justice in the universe. However, because we have all rebelled against God in our sin, our only hope of escaping the judgment of God is to trust in Jesus who endured the fair and full justice of God on our behalf. Only then can we be truly free from sin and judgement.

God cares for his people by giving them Elders who speak God's Word to them, live as examples for them to follow, and watch over their souls. To receive all the benefits that God has for us through the ministry of his Elders, God calls his people to obey and submit to the Elders in so far as they faithful to his Word. He also calls them to remember his hand in giving these Elders to the church, to consider their lives, and to imitate their faith.

This passage shows us that there are two ways to be lost, one by being very, very bad (unrighteous, irreligious) and the other by thinking that you are very, very good (self-righteous, religious). Both types of people need the grace of God given to us in Jesus Christ to come home to God. This understanding is crucial in shaping the church's witness to the world.
