Group B came to a conclusion on June 18th as Romania fought back to earn a crucial point in Naples against Argentina while the Soviet Union exited the competition despite a stirring display against Cameroon. 

Host Rob Murphy and Ciaran O’Hara take you through some of the stories on a day when Hagi met Maradona and neither player gave an inch.

Meanwhile we also take a chance to focus on the jerseys of the World Cup as Denis Hurley journalist and curator from Museum of Jerseys and Kolja Koracak, sports designer and brand manager join us to pick their top five stand out kits. 

The first big hurdle in our project has arrived, the dubious honour of having to sit through what might well be the worst football game of the 1990 World Cup all over again fell to the feet of Rob Murphy, Ciaran O’Hara, Billy Joe Padden and Colin Sheridan. 

Despite the unenviable challenge of re-watching Ireland’s 0-0 draw with Egypt, the quartet completed their mission successfully and can now say with almost cast iron certainty that they have boldly gone where no self respecting Irish person will ever go again by taking one last glance at that infamous encounter which may go down as the worst game of the Jack Charlton era.

In happier news, the crew also look back at two much more entertaining encounters as Belgium once again lit up the competition with their brilliance and Spain found their feet. 

There are three games to look back at on Day 9 but there's one story that seems to stand out, England's moment of reckoning with the media on their backs and form seemingly on a downward trajectory, the fear was a repeat of Euro '88 and yet, just when all seemed to be going array, the tide started to turn. 

Join Rob Murphy, Ciaran O'Hara and Michael Foley as they look back at a day where Brazil beat Juventus, sorry Costa Rica, Scotland roared back into the tournament with a win over Sweden and England found their tune even if they couldn't find the goal to crown a fine display. 

Czechoslovakia continue their momentum and book a place in the next round with a win over their central European rivals Austria while in the second game of the day, West Germany overwhelm the UAE. 30 years later, we find out that the consolation goal wasn’t as much of a consolation as we thought at the time. 

Join Rob and Ciaran as they continue the journey, and considering it was a quiet day they even have time to speculate on what films they would have gone to in the cinema had they taken a one day only break from the action. 

On today’s show author Dave Hannigan is our special guest as he joins, Rob Murphy, Ciaran O’Hara and Mick Foley to share his World Cup memories and review one of the busier days of the World Cup so far. 

The panel look back at Yugoslavia’s hard fought and absolutely critical victory over Colombia; Roger Mila’s headline grabbing two goal performance against Romania and they focus in on the United States as they faced an unenviable challenge against Italy and yet acquitted themselves superbly well. 

Two games today and two hand ball incidents with very different outcomes.

The second hand ball came from the hand of Maradona early in his side's crucial clash with the Soviet Union in Naples. The Argentina number ten stopped a goal with his hand but the transgression went unpunished and the reigning champions went on to win a tight tussle 2-0.

Join Rob, Ciaran and regular guests Colin Sheridan and Billy Joe Padden as they look back at an unexpectedly exciting day 5  with Belgium impressing in their 2-0 victory over a luckless South Korea and Egypt causing a sensation in Group F thanks to a late equaliser that earned them a draw with Euro '88 champions the Netherlands.

Former Irish international John Anderson and Newcastle podcaster and comedian Gavin Webster join the show as we look at the influence of the north east of England on today’s main fixture, with Sir Bobby Robson and Jack Charlton in particular in the spotlight for Ireland v England. There’s also a review of Costa Rica’s big day against Scotland.  

Goals all the way on the third day of action, as two of the competition favourites, West Germany and Brazil, kicked off their campaigns.
