“One Day”

One day I will be dead

And all of the stories of all of the girls

The good, the bad, and the ugly

Will all die with me.

Should I pass them on to my sons?

To my daughter?

Should I ever admit there were others

Than their mother in my beds?

I am trying to preserve their innocence,

Their belief in true love,

But I don’t feel like I’m fading into a face

I don’t want to admit is mine.

Time has been kind to me with my family

I’m afraid, one day, that the man I was

May appear again in the faces of my children.

If they knew, would they still love me?

The man-whore desperate for attention,

(Validation is so blasé)

A boy praying, one day, to be a man

Like my father who was not a whore.

I wish I were better

They deserve better: all of them

My wife, my children, the memories of my past

One day I will die and maybe they’ll know me then

When they wear my tired face.
