What does it mean to ‘pray in the name of Jesus’? At its foundation, it is based on our union with Christ. In John 14:13-17, Jesus teaches that praying in His name means having access to God, cultivating a friendship with Him, and a heart to glorify Him. It means praying with the authority in the name of Jesus and by the power of His Spirit. When we cultivate these things we cultivate a more effective prayer life that leads to doing the greater works of Jesus.

What did Jesus mean in John 14:12 when he said ‘we would do greater works than He did?’ At the very least, it means we will do the same works we see Jesus doing in the gospels. But what does that look like? And what does that mean for our everyday lives? In this teaching, we unpack the answers to these questions and why it is so important to the mission of the church.

Jesus claimed to be God because He is God. He calls us to believe His words and His works. If Jesus is God, then we can give and receive forgiveness. We can have real hope for redemption, restoration, and reconciliation in our lives. We can be a part of God’s mighty work in the world today.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). What does this mean for our everyday life? Following Jesus is a way of life, not just a decision. We need to know which path we are walking and what it means to walk with Jesus. We are also motivated by the final destination for those who trust in Jesus: a place so glorious it is beyond human imagination. And remembering this truth helps us persevere in times of trouble.

Have you ever asked yourself “How am I going to get through this?” On the eve of his arrest, Jesus teaches His disciples how they will persevere in life and ministry when He is gone. He teaches them about love, the Holy Spirit, faith, joy, peace, and unity. He redefines His disciple's relationship with Him as friends. It is through our friendship with God that we will be able to endure and even flourish in life and ministry.

Sometimes especially when we're weary, we need to be reminded that we have everything we need in Jesus. As we journey, we need Jesus to regularly serve and wash us the way only He can. And as a result, we must do what Jesus did but the power that Jesus has.
