Grief and regret are close kin, at least on an emotional level. They both produce melancholy feelings and a painful sadness. Beyond that they are not at all alike. Grief is a healing emotion providing closure, while regret is an unhealthy fixation on the past. Do your grief work, but avoid regret like the plague.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Lord Jesus, help us to grieve without succumbing to regret. And in our grief may we find You near, providing comfort for the present and hope for the future. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
