Along Japan's northeastern coast, generations of people have left stone monuments carrying warnings about tsunamis. One of the most remarkable stands above the small village of Aneyoshi.

Its message was simple: remember the devastation of past tsunamis, and do not build homes below this point. The villagers continued to respect that boundary even as memories of earlier disasters faded elsewhere.

When the devastating tsunami of March 2011 reached the region, the water climbed toward Aneyoshi but stopped below the stone and the homes built higher on the hillside. A warning left by an earlier generation had survived long enough to matter again. ([Smithsonian Magazine][1])

On August 10, 1628, one of Sweden's most impressive new warships left Stockholm on its maiden voyage. The Vasa was heavily armed, richly decorated, and intended to demonstrate the growing power of King Gustav II Adolf's navy.

But the ship would sail only about 1,300 meters. A gust of wind caused Vasa to heel, water entered through its open gunports, and the enormous warship sank in Stockholm harbor.

On Christmas Eve, 1971, seventeen-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded LANSA Flight 508 with her mother for a flight from Lima to Pucallpa, Peru. The aircraft entered a severe thunderstorm and broke apart over the Amazon rainforest.

Juliane survived the fall while still strapped to a row of seats. But surviving the crash was only the beginning. Injured and alone, she had to find a way through one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth.

On January 26, 1972, JAT Flight 367 broke apart while flying over Czechoslovakia. Twenty-eight people were aboard the aircraft. Only one survived.

Her name was Vesna Vulović, a twenty-three-year-old flight attendant who was found alive in the wreckage. According to the official investigation, she had fallen with part of the aircraft from an altitude of 33,333 feet without a parachute.

Her survival became one of the most extraordinary records in aviation history. Decades later, questions would be raised about exactly what happened to Flight 367, but Vesna's remarkable record would remain.
