Five years ago I ruptured my Achilles. When I finally started walking again, the muscle was just gone. That's atrophy — weakening from lack of use. I think our brains are going through the same thing because of screen time. I call it digital atrophy.
If you're 16 and live to 80, that's 64 years. An hour a day of scrolling costs you 2.6 years of your life. Four hours a day — which is closer to reality for most of us — costs you 10.6 years.
And it's not just the time. Three things are quietly atrophying:
Focus. It takes 23 minutes to get into real deep work, but most of us check our phones every five.
Creativity. Heavier phone use is linked to weaker performance on creative tasks — and AI is only accelerating that outsourcing of our thinking.
Social skills. Eye contact, real conversation, asking for something in person — all harder when a screen does the talking for us.
None of this is an accident. The addictive design isn't a bug, it's the feature.
The fix is reps: real conversations, screen-free creative time, sitting with hard problems a little longer. Rebuild the muscle the same way you'd rebuild any other one.
Go find your One Second of Strength — and be happy.

A researcher put rats in water to see how long they could swim. The first ones lasted 15 minutes before they died — the next ones swam for 60 hours, and the only difference was hope.
In this episode, Tanner breaks down the real formula behind burnout — High Expectations + Low Control — and why more effort isn't always the answer. You'll learn why your brain shuts down right when things get hard, what a “rescue point” actually is, and three moves that turn burnout back into momentum: shrink the jar, name the proof, and take the one action you've been avoiding.
If you feel like your effort isn't working anymore, this episode is your rescue point.

What are you built on? Two people get caught in the same storm. One loses everything. One doesn’t move an inch. The difference wasn’t the storm — it was what was underneath, buried out of sight long before the rain ever started.
This week Tanner breaks down the ancient story of the wise man and the foolish man — one house built on rock, one on sand — and unpacks the three things that actually make up your foundation: your beliefs, your habits, and your character. Not vague ideas. The specific, buildable stuff that decides whether you crack under pressure or hold steady.
You’ll learn why other people’s opinions of you were never supposed to become your beliefs about yourself — and how to tell which ones are actually true. You’ll hear why confidence isn’t a feeling you wait for, it’s a track record you build one small action at a time — and why your comfort zone might just be too small. And you’ll find out why character is only ever revealed in the moments nobody’s watching.
Every storm you weather doesn’t just get you through — it makes the foundation stronger for the next one. So today’s question is simple: rock, or sand?

Have you ever felt like you know what you want... but you just can't seem to make progress?
In this episode, I want to share one simple word that has completely changed the way I think about growth, success, and becoming the person I want to be.
That word is unless.
What if you started asking yourself:
"I can't become ______ unless I ______."
That one question forces you to stop wishing and start identifying what actually needs to change.
I talk about three "unlesses" that I believe apply to almost everyone:
Whether your goal is to build a business, make the team, become a better parent, strengthen your faith, or simply become a better version of yourself, this episode will challenge you to think differently about what's really standing between you and the life you want.

Is your teenager sitting on a big goal — and doing nothing about it? This episode is for every parent who has watched their teen dream big but struggle to take the first step, and for every teenager who knows what they want but can’t seem to start.
Tanner opens with an honest question: What is the cost of never trying? Not just for you — but for every person who needed you to show up and you didn’t. He shares the story of how he almost didn’t start speaking to teenagers in schools — convinced his story wasn’t good enough, that he didn’t know how, that he wasn’t the right person. Since starting, he has spoken to over 100,000 teens across the U.S. and Canada. Lives changed because he took one step forward.
Then he shares a conversation from this week — a motivated teenager who wants to build four video games by the end of the summer but hasn’t started. Sound familiar? The goal wasn’t the problem. The size of it was. Tanner walks through exactly how he helped this teen break the overwhelming into the doable: not four games, not even one game — just the first step toward one game.
In this episode you’ll learn:
• Why teenagers (and adults) procrastinate on big goals — and it’s not laziness
• How to break an overwhelming goal into a first step your teen can actually take today
• The difference between “I might start” and “I will start” — and why it changes everything
• How one second of strength is all it takes to begin
If your teenager is stuck, overwhelmed, or afraid to fail, this episode will give you both a framework and the courage to move forward. Share it with them. Listen together. Then ask: what’s the first step?

Bored yet? Good.
Your brain wasn't created to constantly be stimulated. It needs to be bored in order to think, process, and overcome.
Our default tendency is to "fill the void" with content. But what if that was exactly the opposite of what you need in life.
In this episode teenagers will learn the power of boredom!

What would it take for you to wade into the middle of a lake, hammer in hand, and build a bridge board by board? In this episode of One Second of Strength, Tanner Clark explores the life-changing power of setting intentions so strong that nothing — fear, self-doubt, or limiting beliefs — can stop you from reaching your goals.
Tanner shares a powerful story about a photograph he discovered in college 20 years ago that still hangs in his office today, the emotional moment his daughter walked onto a high school soccer field with no cleats and no experience, and a practical 3-level intention-setting framework that you can apply starting today.
• Why most people never reach their goals — and the one mindset shift that changes everything
• How your brain is wired to keep you safe (and how to override it)
• The difference between a limiting belief and a real obstacle
• Tanner’s 3-level intention framework: daily, mid-term, and long-term
• Why writing your intentions down is scientifically proven to make you more focused, resilient, and persistent
• How to use “one second of strength” to get back on track when life derails you
• Set an intention powerful enough that you’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen.
• Fear, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome are temporary emotions — not permanent roadblocks.
• Write down three intentions today: one for the day, one mid-term goal, one long-term identity statement.
• Satisfaction lives on the other side of the fear you’re avoiding.
• You are the author of your life. Nobody else gets to write your story.
Grab a pen and write down three intentions right now:
• Daily Intention — Something small and actionable today (e.g., “I will not let my phone distract me.”)
• Mid-Term Intention — A near-future goal you’re working toward (e.g., making the soccer team, landing a new job).
• Long-Term Intention — A statement of who you are becoming (e.g., “I am a person who always keeps the promises I make to myself.”)
Post them somewhere you can see them every day. Then pay attention — are you on track or off track? Use your one second of strength to make the shift.
