lovely reconciliation romance

This is the third and final story in the Eden Manor series, and it's my favorite. We've seen glimpses of solitary, lonely Silas in the first two stories, a wood and glass artist who is working on some of the pieces for the renovation of Eden Manor. He lives by himself in a one room cabin in the woods, has no real friends to speak of (his best friend having died a few years earlier), and spends his time working or off by himself in the woods surrounding his cabin. Despite his separation from Cassandra, he's never taken off his wedding ring, and he's never agreed to a divorce.

Cassandra is back in town to convince Silas that it's time for them to move on. Though they agreed that during their separation (when she was going away to New York) that they could see other people, as it turns out neither of them did. Cassandra still loves Silas, but she was so hurt by his inability to communicate with her after their devastating news about being unable to conceive that she hasn't even considered opening her heart back up to him again. When he makes the agreement with her to spend some time with him before agreeing to sign the papers she is wary, but also nervous and a little bit excited about spending time with him again. While she's in town, she's also got a job painting a mural at Eden Manor, her artistic talents perhaps not good enough for New York society but definitely appreciated in her home town and with other local artists. The thought of going back to New York is no longer that appealing.

As they spend some time together over the course of the week, Cassandra comes to realize that her expectations of what her future would hold for her were so rigid that they didn't have room for the reality of her life with Silas. Though he had his share of blame in the failure of their marriage, so did she. Spending an hour a day with him makes her realize that the man she fell in love with in high school, and the man she married is still there underneath his gruff and burly facade. His eyes reveal to her the depth of his emotions, ones he hid away from her before but risks to reveal to her now. When they connect on an intimate level mid-week, Cassandra begins to realize that her beliefs about her marriage and its troubles are not so cut and dried. Silas doesn't chase after her though, and while he clearly still loves her, he also knows that she won't be able to have that future she used to dream about with him. It's up to Cassandra to decide what she wants now that there is the chance to save her marriage. It's a short novella but it packs a depth of emotion and heart and was a lovely way to end the series.
