Onesimus-Slavery and Christianity

Listen Later

What does God think of slavery? The story of Onesimus, a slave gives great insight regarding this question. God did not eradicate slavery and he doesn't prohibit it. Why? That sounds horrible, why would he allow it? This sermon indirectly answers these questions. If you'd like a more direct discussion we can make that available as well. This was an assigned topic designed to help us improve our relationships with anyone, even slaves to masters.
The sermon begins at the 3:00 mark. The lengthy introduction has been unedited because the relationship between brother McDade and the Hillsboro church of Christ is very  strong and the love expressed between everyone present is worth hearing.
Slavery is a despicable blight on civilization, yet it exists. What can be done about it? That good question deserves to be answered. It is a geopolitical question and as such governments have the God given responsibility to deal with it properly. There are three institutions (human organizational structures) that God created for mankind. They are, the home, government and the Church. They appear in scripture in that order. All three have authority to govern themselves as they see fit and are responsible to God for how they are governed. The guide for their organization and governance is the New Testament and each will give an account for their principles and actions (Col. 2:14; Gal. 3:24; Heb. 8:6-13, Romans 13:1-7; Eph. 1:20-23; 5:22-6:4; Heb. 13:17). Please let us know if you would like to address this issue further.
Thanks for listening!
