Open Ended Questions for your Marriage

Listen Later

Improve your communication - ask open ended questions. This is the solution to getting a one word answer when your spouse comes home from work. Ask an open ended question.

Have you ever tried to have a conversation with your husband or wife and all you got was a simple one-word answer? I think all of us have. I want to give you a tip that solves the problem of how to avoid getting one-word answers so that you can have a meaningful conversation and strengthen your connection with your spouse or someone you love.
In this episode, I'll share a powerful tip that can transform your daily interactions with your spouse: asking open-ended questions. These questions help you engage in deeper, more fulfilling conversations.
**Examples of Open-Ended Questions:**
- Tell me about your day instead of "How was your day?"
- What happened next?
- Tell me more about…
- How did that make you feel?
- What is something I can do tomorrow to make your day better?
- What are some stresses you're currently facing?
- How can I help?
- How's our connection doing?
- Is there something you'd like to see more or less of in our marriage?
**Do's:**
- Set aside time and be mentally prepared for a longer conversation.
- Listen generously, making eye contact and focusing on your partner.
- Wait until your spouse finishes speaking to ask a follow-up question.
- Be genuinely curious and empathetic.
**Don'ts:**
- Don't use the word “why.”
- Don't interrupt.
- Don't start talking about yourself until your spouse is done.
- Don't give advice unless asked.
James 1:19 is a great verse to remember: "Be quick to listen." A great way to do that is to ask open-ended questions. Next time your spouse comes home, try it and let me know how it goes. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
