Humanity faces three threats it cannot solve: ignorance of God, guilt before Him, and corruption by sin. Zechariah’s crowned high priest points beyond Joshua to a coming ruler who will also serve as priest. Jesus fulfils the promise as prophet, priest and king. He brings God’s truth against ignorance, offers Himself for guilt, and reigns against sin and death. Through His death and resurrection, He builds a living temple from people of every nation, with God’s Spirit dwelling in them.

Sin makes people run from God, but God does not remain distant. Isaiah pictures God crossing the wilderness to fetch His people from captivity in Babylon because He has abundantly paid for their sin. Their return displays His glory, while Babylon's strength fades like grass and His word stands forever. John the Baptist later announces this promise afresh, and Jesus fulfils its greater rescue by bringing people home from sin and death. Hearts can prepare for Him with confidence because His promised salvation will not fail.

A watchman stares into darkness, longing for the first light of morning. Psalm 130 gives that image to a person overwhelmed by suffering and guilt, who knows no one could stand if God recorded every sin. Yet God offers forgiveness and full redemption. Jesus bears the judgement sinners deserve, so burdened consciences can stop hiding their guilt, fix their eyes on Him, and love the God who forgives.

Conversion changes who rules a person's life, where they belong, and what purpose they share. Jesus saves those who trust that He died in their place and rose again, and this inward faith appears in confession and changed actions. No Christian stands alone. Belonging to Jesus means belonging to His flawed church, where God has preserved the good news across generations. God first turns hearts to Himself, then converted people follow Christ's rule, cherish His people, and help others hear that everyone who calls on Him will be saved.

A wedding celebration faces shame when its wine runs out, but Jesus turns water in purification jars into excellent wine. This first sign points beyond the miracle to His arrival, bringing God's goodness and grace to people used to old ways. New wine needs new wineskins. Jesus calls for soft, repentant hearts that surrender old values, while the wine at the Last Supper points to His blood, forgiveness, and the final feast with God.

Insiders naturally favour people who can repay their welcome. Jesus pictures God’s kingdom as a joyful feast where humble guests make room for outsiders, rather than guarding status or expecting repayment. He heals a suffering man while the Pharisees watch Him closely, and later describes overlooked people accepting the invitation that the first guests reject. Because Jesus welcomed His people when they were outsiders, ordinary meals can become places where others receive time, dignity and rest.

Christians often feel out of place when faith makes ordinary choices look strange. Peter calls them living stones in God’s temple, joined to Jesus as the cornerstone and living among others as strangers. Their different life is not retreat but visible goodness that may draw accusers to glorify God. Jesus makes it possible. He suffered without retaliation and bore their sins, freeing them to resist sin, honour authorities, and keep doing good under unfair treatment.

Every hard decision exposes whose wisdom truly guides a life. Isaiah's servant listens to God morning by morning, speaks sustaining words to the weary, and obeys without turning back when suffering comes. Jesus fulfils this picture by willingly facing the cross, where apparent defeat accomplishes His mission; God raises the guiltless servant and defeats sin and death. He cannot be reshaped to serve personal, political, or ideological desires. Those walking in darkness must trust God, hear His servant's voice, and align their lives with His mission.

People often seek God through impressive power, complete explanations, or private signs before they are willing to believe. The cross seems weak or foolish and frustrates human pride, while God makes His wisdom and saving power known there. Jesus came to us at the cross, bore the punishment for sin, and rose from death. God is found not by climbing towards glory, but by receiving the crucified and risen Christ in humble faith.

Creation groans under suffering and decay because humanity rejected God, and no human effort can return the world to its original goodness. Yet corruption will not have the last word. Jesus’ death and resurrection secure hope now and the promised freedom of God’s children, which creation itself will share.
