Hidden sin eventually shows through the tidy side people present. Ephesians 4 begins change with a secure identity: through trust in Jesus, Christians are already saved, loved, and welcomed into God’s family. Guilt and shame cannot create lasting holiness; joy in what God has done and trust that His will is good support real change. Renewed thinking targets each habit’s cue, craving, response, and reward, while God’s Spirit gives strength, patience, and hope through failure.

Stubborn sin can make change feel impossible, but Christians do not fight it alone. The Holy Spirit lives within them, making them holy and giving strength to say no to sin. His power often works through weakness, so confidence does not rest on strong feelings or harder effort. Because He acts freely and powerfully, Christians can expect His work while waiting humbly for Him to complete it and present them blameless before the Father.

Sin does not sit quietly in Christians; it fights against the new life God has given them and pushes towards destruction. Left unchecked, it attacks what God made good and brings His just anger. Yet Christians are not condemned. Their lives are hidden with Christ, whose finished work broke sin’s chains, and the Holy Spirit keeps working against the old self. Covered by Christ and still messy, they can set their minds above and strip away the sin that clings.

Trying harder to become godly can leave Christians feeling heavy and helpless. Romans 8 begins with no condemnation for those who trust Jesus, so killing sin cannot earn forgiveness or eternal life. Instead, the Spirit enables forgiven Christians to put sinful deeds to death and enjoy more of the comfort, energy and hope of life with Christ now. Sin still creates drag, but God's grace gives Christians reason and strength to run towards Jesus as their prize.

Why baptise a child who cannot yet express faith? Baptism pictures dying and rising with Christ and guilt washed away, while marking God's ancient promise to be God to His people and their children. It belongs within a church community that nurtures faith, yet the water itself does not save or magically create belief. Each baptised person must personally trust Jesus, whose death provides the cleansing baptism signifies, while the whole church helps children hear, know and respond to that promise.

Disappointment with God can grow when life does not unfold as hoped. John the Baptist faced that tension in prison, wondering why Jesus had not brought the judgement and freedom he expected. Jesus did not condemn him. He pointed John to His healing, restoration, and good news for the poor, showing a humble kingdom at work. Honest doubt returns to Jesus, while proud doubt avoids repentance; faith trusts the One who takes away sin through the cross.

Cold, stubborn hearts need more than moral improvement; they need God to bring spiritual life from death. Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one can see or enter God's kingdom unless the Holy Spirit gives new birth. This new life is God's merciful work, not something human effort, persuasive words, or religious activity can produce. Jesus died and rose on sinners' behalf so they may live. It grounds persistent prayer, faithful sharing of God's word, and an ongoing fight against sin.

Some people seem too stubborn or distant ever to change. Nehemiah prays for four months before King Artaxerxes, who opposed rebuilding Jerusalem, grants safe passage and timber for the work. God can direct any heart, yet His answers may require patient waiting while He brings circumstances together in His time. Prayer seeks more than a desired result: through Jesus' rejection on the way to the cross, sinners receive the welcome He deserves and may approach their gracious Father with confidence.

Evil can make God seem absent, especially when injustice grows and His answer makes suffering look worse. The prophet Habakkuk speaks to God with anguished honesty, yet he never treats walking away as an option. He waits because God's wisdom lies far beyond human understanding. The cross gives that trust firm ground: God ordained the greatest injustice, as Jesus bore sin to bring salvation through judgement. In evil times, grace keeps His people praying, wrestling faithfully, and rejoicing in God their Saviour.

The future brings changes no one can fully predict, and even expected transitions can create stress. Under deadly pressure, David says his times are in God’s hands because he knows God as his rock, refuge, and personal Lord. Trust may need repeating. Jesus used this psalm’s words on the cross, committing His spirit to the Father while bearing sin, so trouble does not mean God’s loving presence has failed. Knowing God now prepares His people to place each returning fear in His hands.
