Opinion Overflow #3: "Should I Address Someone's Unsanitary Behavior at a Salad Bar?"

Listen Later

We have too many opinions to keep to ourselves! That is, we have too many questions and we'd like to answer more of them, so that's why you're getting Opinion Overflow. Whether you want it or not.

Listener J asks:

"This feels like kind of a silly question to ask, but as I saw the following events unfold today, I knew I had to submit this question. Today I was at Whole Foods having lunch with my daughter. I was standing at the (large, communal) salad bar looking at the "Build Your Own Thai Noodle Salad" section they had and was about to build my own salad when a man walked up with his plate, stuck his finger in the container of salad dressing, tasted it, and walked to another section of the salad bar. Maybe I'm just a germophobe, but I was really grossed out (at this point I opted out of getting anything from the salad bar) and honestly pretty surprised that he did this. This is a communal salad bar. Who knows what he had touched before he put his finger in the salad dressing? I stood there for a minute trying to decide if I should say or do something, but honestly I couldn't come up with what to say and I was trying to wrangle a hungry 6 year old in a busy Whole Foods. I have a few questions:

  1. Is it just me or is this gross?
  2. Should I have said something to the guy who did this? If so, what and how should I have said something?
  3. Right after the man walked away from the salad dressing, a Whole Foods employee came up to the salad bar to bring more lettuce or something to another section of the salad bar. I contemplated saying something to the employee but didn't want to sound weird and was worried about the man overhearing me say something to the employee (its probably obvious here that I don't enjoy confrontation of any kind). Should I have said something to the employee? If so, what could I have said?"
