Show and Tell Legacy: Turning Old Photo Boxes into Inheritable Family Stories

This episode of the Oral History Podcast discusses how Baby Boomers can preserve family photo collections so they don’t become “a box of strangers” without context. The episode highlights oral historian Kenneth Greenberg of Princeton, New Jersey, a member of the Oral History Association, who records life stories and created a service called the Show and Tell Legacy to connect oral history with a digital future. Using an hourly consulting model (about $200/hour), he teaches clients a streamlined workflow with everyday smartphones: photographing prints while narrating memories in real time to create videos. These are uploaded to a private, unlisted YouTube channel, with inheritance handled through Google’s Inactive Account Manager, which can email links to selected heirs after six months of inactivity. The approach aims to make clients independent so they can organize playlists by decade or theme and continue for free.
