  • OCLF - 2019 | Eat Right By Chef Soundhrajan In conversation with Ravishankar Mishra

Healthy Eating habits are highly important in life. Cliché we know, but it doesn’t make the fact any less true. Fortunately, we’re more health conscious than ever. Gym, yoga, regular exercises are now part of our lives, at least for the most of us. But still, we falter here and there when it comes to good eating habits. It’s not uncommon for someone thinking that it’s okay to dig in an extra-cheesy burger once they are done with their exercise regime. And, the people who have a good metabolism and stay slim no matter how much they eat (those enviously lucky people!) are even worse when it comes to good eating habits. For most of us, food is a pleasure besides being a fuel to run the body. So, eating more than what is needed by the body is not so unusual. We wouldn’t be doing any of this, if only we knew the importance of healthy eating habits and how to go about them. So, let’s dive straight into this knowledge pond and take a step towards a healthier body and life. Healthy eating habits mean you include in your diet all the nutrients required by your body in a balanced way while cutting on the junk food. Every nutrient plays a part in helping your body run smoothly. Take fats and carbohydrates, for example, which provide energy; proteins which are central to a good immune system and rebuilding damaged tissues; or vitamins, many of which are excellent antioxidants for toxin-protection of your body. You can’t say you’re doing justice to your health unless you take these nutrients daily in the right amount. Healthy eating habits go a long way in helping the body perform well and stay away from diseases.

Talking about diseases, you have more chance of getting diagnosed with problems like bowel complications, diabetes, heart disease, and even depression if you don’t practice healthy eating habits. Being overweight is another consequence of neglecting good eating habits. Other than having health issues, you’re also likely to deal with self-esteem problems. And if obesity kicks in, it can attract diseases like moths to a flame.

  • OCLF - 2019 | My experience of writing the biography of Rajmata Gayatri Devi By Dharmender Kanwar with Yogita Chaudhary

Rajmata’s status as one of the most beautiful women in the world, her romance and marriage to Jaipur's dashing maharaja, Sawai Man Singh, the classic "Golden Couple" and their lifestyle among the international jet set. Gayatri Devi is an insider's account of the life and times of one of India's most charismatic and enduring royals. Even though much of the book, heavily pictorial, retraces history, there are plenty of nuggets hidden in the hagiography to make for an interesting read. For instance, it is not generally known why her mother Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch Behar first named her Princess Ayesha.

Growing up with a Muslim name called for much comment but the reason was commonplace. Indira Devi happened to be reading Rider Haggard's classic novel, before Gayatri Devi was born and named her after the book's heroine. It was only after their return to India from London that court astrologers decreed her name should start with the letter G.

The author offers a rare glimpse into the relationship between Gayatri Devi and Man Singh's other wives, known formally as First Her Highness and Second Her Highness, how they remained in the background and, barring a few rocky moments, had a close rapport with Gayatri Devi and never contested her ascendancy.

The most interesting part of the book concerns Gayatri Devi's life in Jaipur as the new maharani and how the royals and subjects took to her unconventional ways. Those days no maharani wore slacks in public, drove car, sported bobbed hair, went horseback riding and played squash and tennis apart from polo and shikar. Much of Gayatri Devi's lifestyle, her cordial relationship with the other wives and her eventual prominence was due to her husband, an enlightened ruler who was pretty unconventional himself in terms of attitude and protocol. This book is, in that sense, as much a tribute to him as it is to his glamorous and gorgeous wife. Ultimately it serves to remind us that Gayatri Devi was much more than a "glass doll", as Indira Gandhi once called her.

  • OCLF - 2019 | virtues that will make you successful By Pawan Sinha

Goals- Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors, helps guides your focus and helps you sustain that momentum in ife. Goals also help align your focus and promote a sense of self-mastery. In the end, you can’t manage what you don’t measure and you can’t improve upon something that you don’t properly manage. Setting goals can help you do all of that and more.

Discipline- In life has many virtues like being focused, staying healthy and also avoiding problems. As per the current lifestyle and social trends, a discipline technique seems to be one of the essential life skills. Discipline is one of the factors by which people judge others. Those highly talented and hardworking people cannot be successful if they are not disciplined.

Awareness- Has been highlighted by many as a key indicator of success in a range of performance environments. It is arguably the most important ingredient for belief as every other skill, quality and task you have and undertake can be traced back to awareness.

Concentration- Is the ability to focus the attention on one single thought or subject, excluding everything else from the field of awareness. The ability to focus the attention is one of the most important abilities one should possess. However, most people lack the ability to concentrate. Their attention usually wanders, without being able to fix it on one subject for any reasonable period of time.

Patience- Is a virtue is an understatement. It’s really more of a skill—one that can be learned and needs constant nurturing. Patience is the state of being that occurs between experience and reaction. Whether you’re trying to be patient with yourself, others, or life, it seems to always involve the experience of dealing with delays or obstacles.

  • OCLF - 2019 | It is About APJ Abdul Kalam that what I understood About him By Srijan Pal Singh

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was one of the most futuristic leaders which are apparent through the Vision 2020 which he formulated. He was a man with honor, futuristic and with vision. He cares for everyone including giant to small birds.

We always discussed national issues. Dr. Kalam was worried about Parliament that the supreme institution of democracy was dysfunctional. He said, "I have seen two different governments in my tenure. I have seen more after that. This disruption just keeps happening. It is not right. I really need to find out a way to ensure that the parliament works on developmental politics."

Today, I look back - he took the final journey, teaching, what he always wanted to be remembered doing. And, till his final moment he was standing, working and lecturing. He left us, as a great teacher, standing tall. He leaves the world with nothing accumulated in his account but loads of wishes and love of people. He was a successful, even in his end.

Will miss all the lunches and dinners we had together, will miss all the times you surprised me with your humility and startled me with your curiosity, will miss the lessons of life you taught in action and words, will miss our struggles to race to make into flights, our trips, our long debates. You gave me dreams, you showed me dreams need to be impossible, and for anything else is a compromise to my own ability. The man is gone, the mission lives on. Long live Kalam.

  • OCLF - 2019 | How Public Speaking transformed India, and reshaped politics A speech by Priyadarshi Dutta (Interaction with students)

The public speakers were actually far removed from loquacious men. They were purposeful readers and serious thinkers who were on a mission to enfranchise their countrymen. Thus they emerged as the new icons of the era that people loved and cheered. They made the audience feel empowered and responsible unlike ever before in Indian history. They were the first to espouse national interest and demand accountability from the government. Despite the fact that the British were irked with their empire of eloquence, and a section of Indians was doubtful of the effectiveness of speeches, they continued to gain traction with the masses.

Speechmaking is essentially training in thinking rather than in speaking. Raja Ram Mohan Roy pioneered analytical thinking on contemporary questions. He pondered upon judicial and revenue issues, freedom of press, rights of women and settlement of Europeans in India. He combined these with his thoughts on religious and social reforms. He expressed his ideas mostly in the form of essays, thereby becoming the precursor of prose writing in India. Oratory is critically dependent on the growth of prose. Roy thus prepared India for the great era of public speaking. He led India into a new time zone where thinkers lived in the present rather than in eternity.

  • OCLF - 2019 | My say on Death of Comedy By Darshan jariwalla in Conversation with Vikrant Shandilya

There were various medium initially but now comedy has shifted to social media. As things changes it has found its new habitat. There used to be comedy in performing arts, cinema and television which is no longer there in too many visible forms. But I think it’s missing but not dead yet just shifted. It is hidden. These days’ craze is building for comedy clubs. Purpose of comedy is to make laugh someone. You laugh about many things. But it looks in those aspect comedy has lost its place. If you don’t have good writing you don’t have good comedy. It has gone interesting as it shifted where there is money. And it seems quite obvious. Films would have comic relief where a comic supporting in film was necessary. Still in many south films you can see that. The health of comedy depends upon who write and what they write. Many film star started themselves to do comedy. Moreover language of comic has gone different. Some forms of discrimination are present in most industries. The reason why comedy really caught on was because the scene was vocal, willing to look inwards and move ahead; a part of why the scene paves its own ways, pushing boundaries in the discourse while it’s at it.
