Though Abraham’s relationship with God had grown, he still demonstrated the same failure with Abimelech as he had with Pharaoh about 25 years before. And though he did fail, God did not give up on him.

Our final section in this study of John’s account of the Gospel will focus on the last two chapters. Jesus is raised from the dead and appears to several of his disciples a number of times, with each occasion giving opportunity to strengthen their belief.

This month’s abbreviated lesson focuses on moments when we might feel like everyone is against us. In those moments it is important to remember that God is on our side, and the words of Hebrews 13:6 and the related passages in the Psalms can provide us with that comfort.

If we are going to be dedicated to the restoration of New Testament Christianity, that must also include the mindset of the early church. Our efforts must be about more than just practices and rules, but about the dedication, love, and fellowship that the church displayed at the beginning.

Abraham’s nephew Lot had separated from his uncle many years before, and now living in Sodom was in the midst of a city about to be destroyed. Though he was hospitable to his visitors, the rest of the men of Sodom had other ideas, and Lot and his family were ushered out of the city before its destruction. Nevertheless, tragedy followed Lot as he lost his wife, and the incident with his daughters had a lasting impact.

Naaman went on a journey that took him from Syria to Israel hoping to cure his leprosy. But he also went on a journey in his reaction to Elisha’s plan, being angry at first, but finally listening to what God had prescribed, and being glad that he did. His journey teaches us a great deal about our own response to God when things don’t go exactly the way that we thought they would.

The Lord gave Israel several feasts by which they were to remember the good things he had done for them in the past. Under the New Covenant, God has given one “feast” the Lord’s Supper which Christians share in on each Lord’s Day. It is a special reminder of what God has done for us in Christ, bringing us out of the depth of sin, and giving us hope of eternal life.

Abraham and Sarah’s wait to have a son of their own is almost over, but the wait had certainly tested their faith. God appears to Abraham and promises that Isaac would be born in about a year, and then reveals to Abraham what he is about to do to Sodom.

When we consider the story of Abram, Sarai, and Hagar in Genesis 16, it is a story of different people listening to different voices. Where Sarai listened to worldly wisdom, and Abram listened to the voice of Sarai, we find Hagar, toward the end of the chapter, listening to God. And it raises the question: Who are you listening to in your life? While many voices fight for our attention, there is one voice above all others to whom we should be listening.

Throughout the events of the cross, John is careful to point out how Scripture was being fulfilled. Several moments during the time that Jesus was on the cross are specifically connected with Old Testament scripture by John, showing how God’s plan had played out according to his plan.
