On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 1:4-5
The name of the Book is “The Acts of the Apostles.” But that’s misleading. The Apostles “acted” a lot when they walked the earth with Jesus during His ministry years. But their results were lacking. Frequently, they’d act impulsively or in their own strength without depending on their real source of power – God! Jesus modeled for them what a Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life looked like! But until that Holy Spirit came upon them, they would continually struggle. Jesus promised them (and us) that a gift from above was coming. They were to wait for it! They waited in an upper room for 10 days after Jesus had departed, fully expecting God to deliver what had been promised. On Pentecost, The Holy Spirit came!! The Church was born. Now these Apostles could take action! The Acts of the (Spirit-filled) Apostles left the confines of the Upper Room and went to the streets of Jerusalem! And the world has never been the same.
I am guilty of not always living with the power of the Holy Spirit that has been given to me and lives within me! How about you?
Church, I invite you to begin this Journey through Acts with me. I am expecting us (the church) to experience more of Him and less of ourselves!
