In this lesson, Pastor Miller covers Maji in the birth story of Jesus. Although there is much debate regarding when these Maji came and where they came from, the visit of these Maji to Joseph and Mary would have been a shocking experience. They were humble poor people who now had these important Maji in their presence giving gifts to their son. In this lesson, Pastor Miller covers Exodus 35-40 where God gives Israel instructions regarding Sabbath observance, the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings, and more. These chapters end with the construction of the tabernacle finished but Moses is unable to enter (Exodus 40:34-35). The book of Leviticus will bridge this gap between the end of Exodus and the beginning of Numbers where Moses is able to enter into the tabernacle.

In this sermon, Pastor Miller finishes out Jonah 1 where there is a downward progression in Jonah’s actions. He has gone down to Joppa, down into the ship, and down into a deep sleep. The author of Jonah has used the repetition of “going down” to highlight the spiritual stupor of Jonah. Even the pagan sailors are more sensitive to God than God’s prophet is.

In this sermon, Pastor Miller introduces the book of Jonah. The book itself is very satirical because Jonah, God’s prophet, doesn’t listen to God. There are many other characters in the book that do the exact opposite of what we would expect. The book of Jonah begins like the other prophetic books with  the Word of the Lord coming to Jonah; however, unlike the other prophetic books this is a book about the prophet instead of a book about the prophet’s message.
