“Organic church” is simply a spiritual garden where followers of Jesus grow and multiply because the seed of God’s word is planted in them. When Jesus speaks to this group of believers in Smyrna, he wasn’t doing something unusual.  These disciples were already attuned to the voice of their “Good Shepherd.” The organic church of Smyrna stands as an example to us today to stay true to Jesus and the Gospel no matter what. Greg explores this and the challenge it presents us with as the church of the 21st century.

 Good congregations get things done, they are resilient in the face of adversity, and they don’t compromise their integrity.  And the Lord recognizes this.  But churches small and large, single congregations as well as a Church in a given community can get off track.  They can become such doers that they forget how to “be” church.  Because they are committed to “the presence of Jesus” among them, organic churches listen to Jesus and do what he says, but also strive to retain their first love.

 The churches to which John writes in these first chapters of Revelation are organic assemblies that are associated with the cities in which the believers find themselves.  But he doesn’t just write as an apostle, he writes as a prophet who has a message from Jesus Christ.  Is there room in our local congregations for the movement of the Spirit? Are we open to what Jesus might want to say to us as His Church together in our city, town or neighborhood?
