In Part 6 of Origins, Paul Thacker joins us again to talk about the revelations contained within the NIH grant award documents to the Eco Health Alliance, as well as what was contained in the Eco Health Alliance's DEFUSE grant application to DARPA.  Drastic made the DEFUSE documents available to the public after a whistleblower leaked these documents to them.  We also hear Dr. Linfa Wang defend why he kept quiet about Eco Health's stated goal of adding a furin cleavage site to SARS-like viruses back in 2018.

In Part 5 of Origins, we hear from Dr. Filippa Lentzos and Dr. Alina Chan who both spoke at an online conference about the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus about pandemic investigations and the likelihood of a spillover in Wuhan, respectively.  Then we hear again from Dr. Jonathan Latham who describes his phylogeographic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 related viruses and how they highlight that SARS-CoV-2 is a virus whose constituent parts all appear to come from Yunnan, China and the surrounding area.

In part three of Origins: Birth of a Pandemic, we learn about Peter Daszak, the head of the Eco Health Alliance, a conservation group that has funneled NIH and other government funding to Dr. Shi Zhengli and her team at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.  Daszak was also given a slot on the WHO investigation team that was belatedly sent to China to try and determine the source of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in early 2021.  Then, the tide turns in the US in the spring of 2021, and discussion of the lab leak hypothesis is no longer a taboo.

In part one of Origins: Birth of a Pandemic, we meet Dr. Jonathan Latham of the Bioscience Resource Project and Independentsciencenews.org. Dr. Latham talks about how he came to believe that it was likely that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID19, escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). We also hear that a network of independent researchers called D.R.A.S.T.I.C. came together to work towards to discover the true source of the virus, and in doing so, confirmed that the closest relative of SARS-CoV-2 is actually a virus that Dr. Shi Zhengli of the WIV partially sequenced back in 2016, and further, that the virus is connected to a mystery pneumonia suffered by six men from Yunnan, China, back in 2012.

Origins: Birth of a Pandemic is a new, three part podcast series exploring just where the COVID-19 causing virus, SARS-CoV-2, came from.  For the better part of 2020, most media and academic institutions in the US refused to consider the possibility that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.  In the absence of more official investigations, researchers from around the world have been digging into the issue themselves, following the trail of clues left in the scientific literature.
