A muffled boom rattles through the deck plating as another boarding craft clamps onto the hull. Through the viewport of High Priestess Nienna's chambers, Meyn Arkturus watches attack ships emerge from cloak, their docking claws tearing into the freighter's armor with mechanized savagery.

Twenty years. That's how long he's served as Nienna's Shadow Warden. Twenty years since he walked into her crystal chamber at seven years old—not with a practice blade like other aspirants, but with a paint set. Twenty years since she asked him what the First Warden chose: creation or destruction. Beauty or the blade.

His answer then shaped everything he became.

Now, with alarms howling and raiders forcing their way through deck after deck, Nienna adjusts her ceremonial robes with the same regal grace she's shown at a thousand diplomatic receptions. She's calm. Poised. Almost amused as she teases him about Pellarian VII—about the prince whose kiss once made seventeen-year-old Meyn forget duty existed, if only for one stolen hour in luminous gardens.

"You do not need to hover so close, dear boy," she says. "The end of my life hardly requires an audience."

But the Wardenhood's oath doesn't vanish just because the battle has turned.

Through the viewport, diplomatic vessels burn. Escape pods launch only to be eliminated by cloaked fighters. Other Wardens are making their stands elsewhere on the ship—warriors Meyn has trained beside, fought beside, lived beside for two decades.

His wristlets pulse with golden light. The Tesseract Daggers housed within—legendary weapons that can cut through dimensional space itself—buzz at the threshold of their true power.

And Nienna stands before him, asking the question she's asked in a thousand different ways across twenty years of service: "In all these years protecting an old soul, have you ever allowed yourself to truly live, Meyn?"

What is a Shadow Warden when the one he's sworn to protect tells him to stop protecting? What is duty when your oath demands the impossible? What is a guardian when everything he was built to prevent is already happening?

The ship shudders. The enemy draws closer.

And somewhere in the terrible space between who he is and who he might have been, Meyn must decide what it means to serve.
