Rooted: There Is An Enemy

1 Peter 5:8-11

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9

1. Our EVIL Enemy.

• He HOWLS.
• He PROWLS.
• He DEVOURS.

Satan uses 2 main strategies:

• He attacks our MINDS through FALSE TEACHING.

The devil’s main work is DECEPTION. (John 8:44)

• He attacks our WILLS through TEMPTATION.

How do we fight against the devil?

• Be ALERT
• Be of SOBER MIND.
• Actively RESIST.
• STAND FIRM in the faith.

1. Our VICTORIOUS God.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 5:10-11

There are some things we choose to do that bring suffering.

Sometimes suffering comes and we have no control or choice in the matter.
 

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

    Why are you so far from saving me,

    so far from my cries of anguish?

My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,

    by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;

    you are the one Israel praises.

In you our ancestors put their trust;

    they trusted and you delivered them.

To you they cried out and were saved;

    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.” Psalm 22:1
 

Two tracks we often walk down when there’s suffering:

· The ANGER track.

· The GUILT track.

Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”  John 9:3

God’s silence does not mean God is absent.

If we’re going to suffer well and persevere through it, we need God’s help.

“Father, my best place on earth is in your presence.”

DOING GOOD: LEARN TO DO GOOD

Titus 3:12-15

1.   DECIDE TO DO GOOD

2.   FOCUS ON OTHERS FIRST

3.   PRACTICE DOING GOOD

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” (James 4:17)

Three ways to begin practicing doing good:

·  Pray for one person you can share the love of God with

·  Practice looking at and listening to people

·  Plan to do one good thing for one person everywhere you go

4.   REAP A HARVEST

In Galatians 6:9-10, Paul encouraged Christians to “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. ”

Titus 3:9-11

1. Avoid FOOLISH controversies.

2. Warn DIVISIVE people.

· The FALSE Teacher

· The IMMORAL Example.

· The CONTENTIOUS Spirit.

Bottom Line: Many things can ____________________ us, but Jesus wants to _____________ us.

DOING GOOD: SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY

Titus 3:1-2

“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” Titus 3:1-2

God has established 3 areas of authority:

1.  The FAMILY

2.  The CHURCH

3.  The GOVERNMENT

God is telling us to OBEY the laws of the land.

Why submit to governing authorities:

· Possible PUNISHMENT.

· CONSCIENCE.

· EVANGELISM.

APPLICATION

· PRAY  for our governing leaders.

· CONTACT an elected official in government.

Go to www.waynecountyoh.gov/county-elected-officials for a list of all Wayne County elected officials.

1. Get a prayer request.

2. Share 2 things you APPRECIATE.

3. One CONCERN.

Be a GODLY WITNESS for a GODLESS WORLD.

5 Qualities Paul says we are to have:

· Have a SUBMISSIVE spirit.

· Try to PLEASE your boss.

· Guard your TONGUE.

· Don’t STEAL time or money.

· Be fully TRUSTWORTHY.

1. The BEAUTY of DOING GOOD.

2. The BASIS of DOING GOOD.

Bottom Line:

DO GOOD so that God and the Gospel LOOK GOOD.
