This episode marks the final installment of our Black History Month series, celebrating the extraordinary contributions of Black Americans.
I was honored to speak with Deputy Secretary Andrea Gayle-Bennett from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services. As the first Black female colonel in the Massachusetts National Guard, Bennett has paved the way for future generations.
In this special Black History Month collaboration, she shares her remarkable journey, the importance of representation, and her ongoing advocacy for veterans—especially women and people of color. We also discuss the Acts of Service campaign, which encourages community involvement and honors the contributions of Black service members and women veterans.
The Executive Office of Veterans Services (EOVS) partners with federal and local organizations to provide Massachusetts veterans with top-quality programs, benefits, and advocacy. To learn more about their work, visit https://www.mass.gov/orgs/executive-office-of-veterans-services.
Thank you, Deputy Secretary Gayle-Bennett, for your leadership, support, and incredible conversation!
This episode and the book “I Could Have Been One” are part history lessons and part biography, so my reading experience was different.
After reading “I Could Have Been One,” by Navy veteran and author Donald Jeffries, I had questions. These ranged from what our country was like to what it may become.
Jeffries shares his military experiences, reflections on socialism and communism, and his return to the Christian faith. The discussion covers historical events like the Maddox incident, the impact of political ideologies on society, and the suppression of religious groups in communist regimes.
Donald emphasizes the importance of understanding history to grasp current political climates. The episode aims to educate listeners on these complex topics through Jeffries' unique insights.
You can purchase “I Could Have Been One” from Amazon (https://a.co/d/6QzftbD).
Thank you for talking with me, Donald!
I love conversations that are based on connections. I met Tia May, a Veteran Racing Car Driver, who introduced me to Dr. Pamela Arnell. Dr. Arnell heads 22Zero. As an ambassador for 22 Zero, I met Jeff and Melanie Goldsmith. They do advocacy through On Mission Motorsports.
Jeff and Melanie Goldsmith are co-founders of On Mission Motorsports. They discuss the significance of relationships for veterans and first responders, focusing on how their nonprofit provides high-adrenaline racing experiences to foster camaraderie and mental health support.
Jeff shares his journey with PTSD and the impact of their work, while Melanie emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive, supportive environment. They also highlight their collaboration with 22 Zero to offer additional mental health resources, aiming to build a lasting community for participants.
