Ostracized, Ridiculed, Forgotten...The Rise of the Far Right, and the Death of Conservative Sanity

Listen Later

More Content Talk delves further into the the origins of the far right conspiracy movement... or dump, whatever you prefer... We take a look at Trump's political strategy, if you can call it that, and compare it to his "surprise" win in 2016. We examine some of the history of this country, including the 1990s, when the conspiracy movement began to blend with the republican party. Though America loves to claim otherwise, far right conspiracy theories, generally considered "extreme" by liberals, are quite well received by half the country. We ask the difficult question of whether or not Trumpism is just American patriotism without the filter. Trump's entire campaign was essentially a referendum on political correctness, critical thinking and science. The response from the left has been quoting high-minded moral sentiments, and scientific papers that the right refutes. Is this reasonable? Perhaps, but how does one reason with a person who considers reason itself to be an opinion, or even a myth. Why do we think love is the answer in a nation that thrives on hate?

Why would people believe that violence and hatred are the answer in a nation that callously throws people out on the street when they lose their job? Why would the right distrust the left after the successful Obama administration, which was responsible for a 20 percent increase in home cost, a 20 percent decrease in home ownership, and a 207 percent increase in gun ownership? I wonder why people wouldn't listen to college trained experts who refer to them as uneducated hicks? Why not listen to Bill Gates when he was responsible for one of the biggest economic crashes in history? Is it really that difficult to understand? Is it really that surprising that people who refused to sell wedding cakes to legally married couples would vote for a man who would ban abortion on a whim? Is it difficult to accept that Americans have a deep fear of government, whether they are liberal or conservative? Will the Democrats and Republicans ever own up to their failures as parties or will they continue to blame inconsequential progressives every time they lose an election? Are we really that polarized or are we just saying this so that we feel better about our image? We ask these questions and more on this installment of More Content Talk. Listen today. Listen more tomorrow. Repeat.
