Dave Smith is one of the best track and cross country coaches around. And he has the national titles to prove it. But for someone as successful as Smith is, it’s wild to think that almost none of it happened. He could have been a pharmacologist—and even has the doctorate to prove it. But it wasn’t the right fit. Passion for what he does drives Smith to be great. And it rubs off on those around him. He doesn’t lack confidence. If Dave Smith has his way, there will be plenty more championships to come at Oklahoma State.

Despite being just 40 years old, Mike Boynton has already had a long journey in the game he loves. He started at South Carolina as a player in the early 2000s, and immediately went into coaching. Boyton stayed on the east coast, with stops at Furman, Coastal Carolina, Wofford and his alma mater before leaving to join Brad Underwood’s staff at Stephen F. Austin, where he hoped to get the head coaching job. But after some early career disappointment, opportunity would arrive at Oklahoma State. Boynton just didn’t know it yet. In 2017, Boynton became the 20th head coach in the history of Cowboy basketball. And he couldn’t be happier to be sharing the stage with the other coaches on campus. Now in his sixth season—and with clear skies ahead—Boynton is ready to take the next step.

In 2011, there were two football programs in America that became must-see-TV when it came to uniforms, because they changed every week. Of course, Oregon was one. But the other? That was Oklahoma State. The OSU uniforms became such a hot topic of conversation that they were kept hidden until game day. And occasionally, there might even be a twist to the uniform after the teams warmed up and went back into the locker room. 11 years later, the uniform combinations are part of the OSU football culture. And Justin Williams, who oversees the equipment operations for the Cowboys, is one of the people to thank. He’s the person most heavily involved with OSU’s uniforms from conception to design to implementation to what’s hanging in the lockers on game day. In this episode, we take you behind the scenes of how Oklahoma State’s uniforms get designed, implemented and ultimately, onto the field on game day. This is how it works.

It’s one thing to say Tom Hutton has taken a road less traveled. He’s also taken one of the LONGEST roads to playing college football. Nearing his mid-30s and hailing all the way from Newborough, Victoria, Australia, Hutton’s journey to Oklahoma State has been anything but ordinary. He played Australian Rules Football and worked in construction and at a paper mill back home. But he decided to try punting at Australia’s famous ProKick Academy. And it didn’t take long for Hutton to gain the interest of Oklahoma State. The rest, as they say, is history. Hutton is one of the best punters in the Big 12, relishes the “old man” role on the team, and is enjoying the ride of a lifetime.

Chad Weiberg’s name is synonymous with Oklahoma State athletics. He’s a 1994 graduate of OSU, his brother played for Eddie Sutton, and his uncle was the commissioner of the Big 12. But despite being the son of a coach, Weiberg didn’t think coaching was in his future. His skillset is perfect for his role as OSU athletic director. But sometimes, you first have to leave to find your way back home. And after more than a decade away and stops at Kansas State and Texas Tech, Weiberg had the chance he was looking for. In this newest chapter of an already accomplished career, Chad Weiberg is proud to be home, and is ready to lead Oklahoma State to the next level.

Grace Yochum is a GOAT, of sorts. She’s the greatest of all time when it comes to scoring goals for the OSU Cowgirls soccer team. With a record 36 career goals and counting, Yochum is an all-time great. But the senior from Texas almost didn’t have this opportunity. But Yochum found a home at Oklahoma State. And throughout her time with the Cowgirls, she’s overcome adversity, including an injury that left her devastated. Yochum didn’t stay broken for long. And she’s grateful for the journey that’s led her to today. For Grace Yochum, home is setting records in Stillwater.

Derek Mason wants to win. It’s part of what drew him to Oklahoma State. The other thing that excites the Pokes’ new defensive coordinator about being in Stillwater? A sense of identity. Mason has his own identity—that of being one of the best defensive minds in college football. It’s a reputation he built during his time as Stanford’s defensive coordinator, but that opportunity didn’t arrive without some self-doubt and, ultimately, self-belief. That belief trickles down to Mason’s players, and fits what he wants to be as a coach. With big aspirations and championship dreams, Mason and Oklahoma State are a perfect fit.

Mike Gundy ended his Oklahoma State playing career with an incredible 23 school records. He helped lead the Cowboys to two bowl wins and two 10-win seasons. With no pro career in the cards, he immediately turned to coaching, joining Pat Jones’ staff upon graduating. Gundy’s coaching journey is one of hard work, determination, and never giving up…even when it would’ve been easy to call it quits. It wasn’t until 2002—Gundy’s second season after returning to the Cowboys from stops at Baylor and Maryland—that he finally tasted the success of a winning season. Gundy would serve four years as the offensive coordinator under Les Miles before getting the call to lead the program on his own as the 22nd head coach in Cowboy football history. Now in his 18th season, Gundy is the second-longest tenured coach in college football, trailing only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz. And with seven 10-win seasons under his belt, he’s proving to be the best to ever do it at OSU.
