  • Cognitive Disability Frame of Reference

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Do you want to know more about cognition? have you heard about different cognitive levels?

In this episode, I talk about a Frame of reference called Cognitive Disability where it talks about the 6 stages of cognition conceptualised by Claudia Allen. While a lot of people are into cognitive behavioural therapy, I find that that is not the correct frame of reference for people with organic brain pathology. Cognitive disability is a better choice for clinicians. I think the only reason why we are not using this is because it is not widely known in the UK. But, In the field of Occupational Therapy, this is a headliner. This is very useful in critical care practice, head injury, elderly medicine and even paediatric and learning disability arena. This Frame of Reference ties up very well with the model, Ecology of Human performance. Enjoy.

"Does my patient need carers when she is independent? I could not justify getting and requesting a carer for her? She and her family are so difficult! this is stressing me out!"

An Occupational Therapist felt her patient is independent so she did not recommend carers. When we explored the case, we were able to justify that carer support is the best line of action for the patient. This episode is a case study that highlights clinical reasoning and the parameters on which a decision was made.

  • Stages of Occupational Therapy Treatment in Rehabilitation

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

How do you do your intervention? Is there is there a formula? Is there anything out there that can guide you?

In this episode, I talk about, the long forgotten, stages of Occupational Therapy treatment in physical rehabilitation. We always talk about the process of OT at he university, in clinical placements , from referral, to assessment, to intervention, to discharge. We have forgotten that the intervention also has a process. It has a continuum that some OTs, particularly the experts, do unknowingly. In this episode, I came to a realization that we may be forgetting the first two of the process. This is probably why our OTs are losing the treatment skills. I hope that this episode will stimulate the listener's drive to explore and rekindle their clinical skills.

  • Reflections on Critical Care Assessment

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

One of the common questions in the practice of OT in critical care is what are the assessments that and OT can do? I have noticed that this tends clinicians to look for set structures that that assist them with their practice. I find that we should not be relying on structures, instead, we should be relying on developing the global and ultimate skill of being able to assess what ever is presented before us so that we can intervene based on the problems that patients present to us. I am certain that this will be one of the many practice reflections that this podcast will capture.
