Girls in the Middle is an organization focused on inspiring 5th-8th grade girls in southeastern Colorado to pursue paths in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).

About Keynote Speaker, Sarah Droege: 

 Graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Sarah is now a practicing Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. She has worked in a variety of settings and with diverse populations. Sarah was even lucky enough to return to East Africa and lived on the island of Zanzibar carrying out mental health development work for a year! Some of the mental health concerns which have been emphasized in Sarah’s service provision include intersectionality and identity, living LGBTQIA+, substance use, incarceration and community transitions, multicultural challenges, and chronic illness. Sarah and her partner also run a small local private counseling and supervision practice. Together they enjoy playing with their endlessly energetic standard poodle, Boomer, and visiting their 3-year-old niece in Longmont, Colorado. 

 Following living abroad in Oman and Morocco and graduating from the University of Denver with a degree in International Affairs and an emphasis in Arabic, Sarah decided to join the United States Peace Corps. It was in Kenya that she began providing health-based services to individuals residing in and around her extremely rural Maasai village of Naroosura. In Kenya, Sarah became a pharmacist, a midwife. She was asked to be a health educator, a vaccinator, an EMT, and a translator. But the role that decided her future was when Sarah was approached about offering group counseling support to HIV-positive individuals in the Loita watershed. This experience solidified for Sarah that upon her return stateside she would pursue graduate studies so as to be adequately trained to provide such important mental health services. After all, her dad always told her: “If you’re going to do a job, do it right.”
