Dracula, Part III — The Making of a Monster | Halloween Special

The Ottoman Empire Podcast | Land of Myths & Shadows | Extra Episode 06, Part 3

Before Dracula became a legend, before the vampire stories, and before his name became synonymous with terror, there was a young Wallachian prince caught in one of the most dangerous political struggles of the 15th century.

And his story is considerably more disturbing than anything Hollywood could invent.

In this special Halloween episode, we return to the extraordinary life of Vlad III Dracula, the historical figure who would become known as Vlad the Impaler.

Following years spent under Ottoman control, the murder of his father and brother, and the violent struggle for Wallachia's throne, Vlad finds himself navigating a world dominated by powerful men: Sultan Murad II, Mehmed the Conqueror, and the formidable Hungarian commander John Hunyadi.

We'll explore Dracula's complicated relationship with the Ottoman Empire, the contrasting fortunes of Vlad and his younger brother Radu the Handsome, his brief first reign in 1448, and the political maneuvering that eventually brought him back to power in 1456.

This isn't the story of a supernatural vampire. It's the story of how a brutal century helped create one of history's most infamous rulers.

And believe me, we're only getting started.
