Obedience is a major part of our walk with God as it reflects our love for God, loyalty to Him, and trust in His judgement. However, obedience does not come naturally to humans. Join us as Dr. Folashade Oloyede of the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary speaks on the topic, Checking Our Obedience.  Dr. Folashade Oloyede is a language specialist, a passionate Bible translator, and a theological educator. She holds a Master of Divinity degree in Religious Education; this is in addition to her bachelor’s and Master of Arts degrees in the English Language. Her doctoral degree is also in the English Language with Pragmatics, the study of the meaning of language in context, being her area of specialization.  She is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomosho, where she teaches English Language and Communication related and research courses. She is also the head of the Publishing Unit of the same institution. She strongly believes that God’s word in the heart of humankind produces transformation, and such transformed people can rise to become the “Repairers of Broken Walls” and “Restorers of Streets with Dwellings.” (Isaiah 58:11-12).

In Christianity, self-evaluation and reflecting on one’s impact on others is an important part of spiritual growth and understanding one’s role in the world. And as Christians, we are called to model our lives after Jesus and strive to follow HIS example. This means that in evaluating ourselves, we should look to see if we are living out the values and teachings of Jesus which includes things like love, compassion, forgiveness, and humility.  We should also consider the impact we have on others. Are we living in a way that reflects the love and grace of God, or are we causing harm and division? Are we using our gifts and talents to serve others and bring Glory to God or are we using them solely for our own benefit? Often, people make their decisions about life without even thinking about God. As a Christian, when we do this, we are especially challenged by God's call on our lives. Generous is a word we may use to describe people who have positively impacted our lives. Although generosity is often associated with monetary gifts, generosity extends well beyond money and includes small acts of kindness and compassion from a loved one, friend or even a stranger.

Jesus's famous command, "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31) is often easier said than done, especially when it comes to that neighbor across the fence or next door. Some people do admit it's often easier to love the "neighbor" across the ocean than the one across the road. Distance allows us to feel good about less involvement, but Jesus asks us to help where there is a need. That means knowing the need, and knowing the neighbor. It is well-known that there are several different Greek words that are translated with the word love, but the love called for in John’s letter in the Bible is the word agape, which speaks of the highest form of love there is. This form of love is characterized by self-sacrifice and is the kind of love that God displayed for us by Christ’s sacrifice (John 3:16). The kind of love that causes John to address his friends as agapetoi—beloved, or, “divinely loved ones”.
